Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will get their summer of international competition under way, gearing up for Euro 2024 with a friendly against fellow European side Finland.

While Portugal's recent history at the FIFA World Cup is one of repeated disappointment, they have traditionally logged qualify results at the Euros, reaching the semifinals in four of the last six editions of the tournament, including a title in 2016.

Their success on a continental level coincides with Ronaldo's career, and at 39 years old, it's almost surely his last go around at the European championship.

They will gear up for the tournament with a pair of friendlies against Finland and Croatia. The first warmup match comes on Tuesday against 61st-ranked Finland, who did not reach the Euro finals after falling to Wales in the first playoff round last year.

Portugal vs. Finland prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Portugal (-600)
  • Score prediction: Portugal 3-1 Finland

While still reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo at 39 years old, Portugal boast one of their strongest squads in recent memory, with players at big clubs in their prime at all positions.

Finland, who have been beaten by far worse teams than Portugal in the past two years, just won't be able to cope, even if they're able to find the back of the net at some point during the game.

While Portugal have been uncharacteristically leaky the last two games, the four goals they've conceded in those two matches all came in the second half.

Incredibly, the last time Portugal conceded a first-half goal was all the way back in the 42nd minute of their 2022 World Cup defeat to Morocco, when Youssouf En-Nesyri scored the only goal of the match to knock Portugal out of the competition. Since then, Portugal have played an unbelievable 12 consecutive matches without conceding a first-half goal, with all six goals conceded in that time coming after the break.

Finland present a solid goal scoring threat, detailed a bit below, but Portugal do well to press through the first 45 minutes without conceding — it's after halftime where they must improve.

Portugal vs. Finland prop bet

  • Pick: Both teams to score — Yes
  • Odds: +115 (BetMGM)

Portugal are known for their defensive acumen, but they have slipped in that regard of late. The March international break saw Portugal beat Sweden 5-2 and fall to Slovenia 2-0, conceding multiple goals in both games.

Finland, meanwhile, have not been held off the scoresheet since last October when losing 2-0 to Slovenia (common opponent!), scoring in each of their last five games including multiple goals in four. While they haven't faced a defensive-minded side like Portugal in that stretch, a 4-0 victory over Northern Ireland is impressive from an attacking standpoint.

This will be a solid litmus test for Portugal's chances of pushing deeper into Euro 2024 with a defensive strength.
