Portugal conclude their on-pitch preparations for the 2018 World Cup when they take on Algeria at Estadio da Luz on Thursday.

It is the third and final warm-up game for Fernando Santos' side, who have already played out draws against Tunisia and Belgium.

With Iberian rivals Spain waiting in their opening game in Group B, a convincing home win will be the ideal send-off before they make their way to Russia.

Algeria, meanwhile, will be watching the summer's action from afar, but they will be determined to end a three-game losing streak, which continued with a 3-2 defeat to Cape Verde last time out.

Match Preview

Bernardo Silva Portugal 2018

Despite being the reigning European champions, Portugal are considered outsiders when it comes to challenging for the World Cup and they haven't managed to shake that perception following a string of uninspiring displays in recent friendlies.

Santos' men cruised their way through qualification, winning nine out of their 10 games, racking up 32 goals and conceding just four in the process.

However, since then they have looked unconvincing and in 2018 they have managed just one win from their four World Cup warm-up games to date - against Egypt.

A heavy 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands in March has been followed by draws against Tunisia and Belgium, so the game against Algeria gives the Selecao a chance to put on a show of reassurance ahead of their Russia campaign.

Indeed, the return to the fold of Ronaldo, whose international duty was put on hold to allow for a break after Real Madrid's Champions League final success, will provide a timely boost and he, along with the rest of the squad, will be eager to show they are ready to mount a challenge for the world title after exiting at the group stage in 2014.
