The Portland Timbers announced Thursday the acquisition of Costa Rican midfielder David Guzman.
The 26-year-old joins the Cascadian side after an eight-year career with Deportivo Saprissa. In 2016, Guzman had 23 league appearances, as well as four more appearances (all starts) for Saprissa in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Pressure on America in Liga MX final first leg
“David is an experienced player we have tracked for some time and one who fits the positional profile we targeted this offseason,” Timbers general manager and president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson said in a club statement. “He has experienced what it is like to play in Portland and is very excited about this opportunity to join the Timbers. We are pleased to welcome him to the club and his new city.”
In addition to his extensive career with his country's top professional club, Guzman has also earned 25 caps with Costa Rica's national team. The Timbers believe his mix of experience and ability in the midfield will be valuable for their side heading into the 2017 MLS season.
"Guzmán is a true No. 6 and will be a good fit on both sides of the ball,” Portland head coach Caleb Porter said. “He is a technical, possession-type player and is smart positionally to help connect our midfield and back line defensively. David is also hungry to win more trophies and we feel his edge will complement the other players in our squad."
