The Philadelphia Union announced Monday the signing of forward Jay Simpson.
Sources: LA Galaxy lining up serious bid for Jonathan dos Santos
A 28-year-old London native, Simpson was most recently with Leyton Orient. His career began with Premier League giant Arsenal in 2007, although he never played a league match with the Gunners. Simpson has had stints throughout England, including Hull City, QPR and Millwall. In 2013 he joined Buriram United for a single season in Thailand before heading to Leyton Orient, with whom he scored 25 goals in 45 league appearances in 2015-16.
“Jay brings goal scoring prowess to our team, in addition to a valuable veteran presence, as he has demonstrated with multiple clubs in England,” Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a club statement. “He has played at the highest levels of club soccer, including in the Premier League, and we are excited to add a forward of his quality to our squad.”
The Union used Targeted Allocation Money to acquire Simpson, who will count as an international.
