Cristiano Ronaldo sent records tumbling when he scored a penalty that some viewers considered contentious to put Portugal ahead against Ghana at the 2022 World Cup.

After dispatching his spot-kick following the decision by American referee Ismail Elfath to award him the foul, Ronaldo wheeled away to celebrate in the nearest corner with his teammates. The fans nearby obliged with his "Siuuuuu" chant as the five-time Ballon d'Or winner became the first player to score at five World Cup final tournaments.

There were more theatrics to come. With a minute of normal time remaining, Ghana winger Osman Bukari scored to reduce the deficit to 3-2 and raced away to imitate Ronaldo's celebration.

Ronaldo was clearly among those who felt Bukari's effort wasn't quite as aesthetically pleasing judging by his dismayed reaction as the cameras cut to him. If Bukari ever has as much practice as the record holder for men's international goals, maybe the 23-year-old will become better at it.

The cheeky stunt clearly entertained fans, with some even suggesting that they preferred Bukari's to the original version.

Others felt it lacked professionalism, with one calling it "unserious behavior" and asking: "Why are you celebrating a goal like that when you're down one in the 88th minute? Grab the ball and get your *** to the halfway line and get the game going."

With the eyes of the world on the game, the substituted Ronaldo was immediately shown raising an arm and looking perturbed on Portugal's bench.

The forward, who recently left English Premier League giants Manchester United, made history at the finals by becoming the first player to score at five different World Cups.

The veteran's penalty gave his side the lead for only nine minutes before Ghana equalised and then conceded two further goals in quick succession.

Bukari's goal set up a frantic finish to a thriller that burst into life when Ronaldo got off the mark for the country he captains in Qatar.

Portugal are next in action against Uruguay on November 28, when Ghana face South Korea earlier in the day in both sides' second games of the group stage.
