Newcastle United made it three consecutive wins against Manchester United in all competitions, a feat not seen in over a century, as they claimed a 1-0 Premier League victory on December 2.

Anthony Gordon's early second-half goal was a reward for 55 minutes of dominance. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was caught sleeping at the back post and Kieran Trippier easily picked out the Englishman.

On the day England's 2024 European Championship group was drawn, Marcus Rashford will be praying Gareth Southgate spent his Saturday away from his TV as his performance was apathetic. Another United forward who gave a listless outing was Anthony Martial and he was involved in a slightly heated debate with his Dutch manager in the first half. The pair were hooked on the hour mark as their commitment was questioned again.

Erik ten Hag's side were second-best to the Magpies in every aspect in what was their latest toothless performance. It is their first defeat in the league since the Manchester derby but it is their 10th loss of the season in all competitions — one that leaves them nine points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.

On the other hand, Eddie Howe's men, as they so often do, looked hungrier from minute one and pressed United into submission. Their deserved win means the Red Devils have now gone 13 games without beating a team away from home who started the day in the top eight of the Premier League table.

Newcastle United vs Man United live updates, highlights from Premier League

FT: That's it! Newcastle deservedly come away with all three points.

95th minute: United waste a free-kick from the left as it's hit too close to Dubravka.

90th minute: Nine minutes added on! In fairness, we have had two lengthy stoppages for injuries.

89th minute: So close for United and it's come from nowhere! Antony's shot is redirected into the back of the net off Maguire, who was in an offside position.

84th minute: Pope is substituted after he suffers what looked to be a painful injury. Eddie Howe cannot catch a break with his injury crisis.

78th minute: Newcastle shout for a penalty! Joelinton moves down the left flank and delivers a cross into the centre of the box. Miley's attempt comes off Wan-Bissaka's thigh then onto his arm and VAR wave play on.

66th minute: Look at what it means to Gordon.

63rd minute: Maguire's header sails way over the bar, much to the delight of Newcastle's support.

60th minute: Hojlund and Antony are on for Martial and Rashford. There's no surprise there, the two starters have been useless for United.

55th minute: GOAL! 1-0 NEWCASTLE! It's been coming for the home side and it's Anthony Gordon with a massive goal. He pounces at the far post after Wan-Bissaka fell asleep.

48th minute: Rasmus Hojlund is already warming up for United. You'd expect that change for Martial is going to happen sooner rather than later.

46th minute: The second half is underway, let's see what it has in store.

HT: Erik ten Hag has a LOT of work to do if his side are coming away from St James' Park with three points. Eddie Howe's Magpies have been superb and look like scoring every time they attack but just haven't been able to make it click in the first half.

45th minute: Schar is getting forward more and more. He this time tries to curl an effort into the far right corner from the left of the 18-yard box but he can't get it on target.

44th minute: Maguire again prevents a potential goal-scoring opportunity with a superb block from the corner.

38th minute: Trippier rocks the bar from the set-piece! Onana was beaten. It was a terrific strike from the right-back.

37th minute: Schar is brought down by Maguire on the edge of the box and the free-kick is in a wonderful position.

32nd minute: United seem to have weathered the Geordie storm for now but still can't quite get their game going.

28th minute: Miley is having another great game for the Magpies in the midfield. He's finding himself in some advanced positions and I can't quite remember when United made it out of their own half!

22nd minute: Livramento has been sensational for the hosts. Dan Burn is in danger of losing his full-time left-back position.

20th minute: Another huge chance for Newcastle! Isak swings at it with his left foot and Harry Maguire's block keeps the score 0-0. The Magpies are all over United here.

17th minute: Onana is called into action and this time Newcastle find space in behind Dalot, who has had a poor start to this match. Almiron's effort is saved well by the United goalkeeper.

10th minute: Dalot has just taken the ball away from Onana and nearly ended up putting it into his own net! That was a play that looked like a player with little confidence in his goalkeeper. Worrying times for United...

8th minute: Isak is picked out beautifully in the box by Schar but he can't bring it down and Onana collects.

6th minute: Livramento is causing Wan-Bissaka all sorts of problems down the left flank and Newcastle are looking dangerous early on.

3rd minute: The Newcastle fans may have noticed Onana's mistakes in midweek, they're jeering the goalkeeper with every touch he gets in these opening stages.

1st minute: We're underway at St James' Park!

10 mins until kickoff: The warm-ups are nearly complete and kickoff is rapidly approaching.

30 mins until kickoff: "It’s tactical, also rotation is part of it."

45 mins until kickoff: After a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in August, Newcastle have won all five of their Premier League home matches, and by an impressive aggregate score of 12-1.

1 hour until kickoff: We have the team news! 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo starts for Manchester United. As does Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial as Rasmus Hojlund is only fit enough for the bench. For Newcastle United, they remain unchanged from their clash with PSG in midweek.

1 hour 30 mins until kickoff: We're expecting the official team news in around half an hour but there are suggestions on social media that Luke Shaw will partner Harry Maguire at centre-back this evening. The other rumour is that Antony does not start for the away side.

2 hours until kickoff: Howe recognises the challenges United will bring to St James' Park this evening.
