Newcastle United look to defend home turf against one of the top Premier League sides as they take on Liverpool at St. James' Park on Sunday.

The Magpies found little joy in a narrow 1-0 loss to the Manchester City juggernaut last time out, and a positive result here would be a stellar way to rebound from that defeat.

Liverpool secured a bounce-back of their own in a recent 3-1 win over Bournemouth, helping them trend upwards from the season-opening draw with Chelsea. Now, the aim for the Reds is to build momentum, and victory at the Newcastle fortress would do just that.

Jurgen Klopp will be going for a Premier League record in this match. He currently holds 10 consecutive wins in Premier League action over Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, and no manager in EPL history has ever picked up 11 straight league victories over another opposing boss.

Newcastle vs Liverpool prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Newcastle (+120)
  • Handicap lean: Newcastle -0.5 (+110)
  • Score prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Liverpool

Newcastle are thought to be favourites at home, understandably, but given Liverpool's expected top-four challenge this year, the Reds have a clear chance to pick up a result on the road.

The Jurgen Klopp record over Eddie Howe is a notable accomplishment, but Howe is currently in charge of the best squad he's ever held over the course of his career, by a significant margin. Liverpool won 2-0 last time here, but the sides are significantly different since that meeting back in February.

    Newcastle vs Liverpool: best bet

    • Pick: Mohamed Salah to score anytime
    • Odds: +175 (BetMGM)

Liverpool's best player is having a great start to the season but hasn't quite cashed in on his opportunities. He was unplayable against Bournemouth where he bagged a goal, but even in the draw against Chelsea he was heavily involved.

At one point earlier in his career, Salah had scored in four straight games against Newcastle, and in six of eight, but he's gone three matches without a strike. Still, he's picked up three assists in those three games, and it's only a matter of time before he's back on the scoresheet.

    Newcastle vs Liverpool prop bet

    • Pick: Under 4.5 yellow cards
    • Odds: +148 (FanDuel)

There's plenty of reason to think that cards will be shown in this match, but not to the absurd levels that the odds have been juiced. Newcastle led the Premier League in yellow cards last season, and Liverpool have had their own disciplinary issues, but it has ballooned the over/under to 5.5, which is a ridiculous bar to clear.

Instead, we're pouncing on the value presented. Last time these two teams met, they drew only three cards, including Nick Pope's red. The time before, just two bookings were handed out; the time before, three.

Referee John Brooks handed out more yellow cards per match than all but two full-time Premier League officials last season, but that's largely because he was assigned games between lowelevelteams, which often produce more bookable offences. In his past four games involving one of these two teams (two for each), he's gone over three yellow cards just once.
