Anthony Gordon handed Arsenal their first defeat of the Premier League season as Newcastle edged a feisty encounter 1-0 at St James’ Park.

Arsenal had the better of a first half with few chances, although tempers boiled over after Kai Havertz was only booked for a 36-minute lunge on Sean Longstaff, after which three Newcastle players including Longstaff were also cautioned for dissent.

Referee Stuart Attwell losing control of the closing stages of the opening period — when Bruno Guimaraes was not booked after appearing to elbow Jorginho before booting the ball at Havertz and shoving Declan Rice — paled next to the officiating minefield that followed the winning goal.

Gordon smuggled home from close range after David Raya got caught in no man's land under substitute Joe Willock’s cross and Joelinton bested Gabriel in the air. VAR checks for the ball going out of play, a foul by Joelinton on Gabriel and offside against Gordon were all either inconclusive or fell in Newcastle’s favour and the goal stood.

Mikel Arteta was furious at the manner of the defeat and the Premier League is set for its latest refereeing postmortem.

However, the Gunners had the lion’s share of possession in both halves, took 11 fruitless corners and managed a solitary shot on target. Arteta’s team were structurally sound as they always are, but they badly missed Martin Odegaard’s midfield creativity and Gabriel Jesus’s cutting edge in attack.

The result leaves Arsenal third in the table behind leaders Manchester City — 6-1 winners over Bournemouth on Saturday — and Tottenham, who can go back to the summit with victory over Chelsea on Monday.

"It's embarrassing. It's a disgrace" — Why was Anthony Gordon’s goal against Arsenal allowed to stand?

First of all, credit for the goal has to go to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who sent on Jacob Murphy and Willock in a double substitution that meant Gordon shifted to centre-forward and Joelinton moved into the front three. A minute later, all four were involved in the game’s decisive moment.

Murphy’s contribution, which preceded the 28-year-old suffering another shoulder injury setback, wasn’t exactly one from the training ground. He had a shot that almost hit the corner flag. More pertinently, it was a shot that almost crossed the byline for a goalkick. Indeed, from some angles, it looked like the ball was out.

But the technology that covers goal lines does not stretch the width of the field, which means the video officials were left with a bit of a guessing game. No angle was conclusive so there was no grounds to overturn the on-field decision that the ball stayed in.

Joelinton got above Gabriel to win the header. He did have arms on the Arsenal central defender’s back but this was simply down to him getting up first with a better-timed jump. This was the clearest instance and the VAR was again happy to go along with the initial decision that gave the benefit of the doubt to strong attacking play.

Raya’s haphazard attempt to claim the cross meant that on one frame only Gabriel was between Gordon and the goal. So there were suspicions of offside, even though Joelinton knocked the ball backwards. Inevitably, given how the move had unfolded until that point, it was very messy and there was no conclusive VAR angle to decide whether Gordon was offside. Again, the onfield decision stood.

"It's embarrassing, it's a disgrace," Arteta fumed afterwards, speaking to Sky Sports. "That's how everyone feels in our dressing room. It's not acceptable, there's too much at stake."

In his press conference he said: "For many reasons, it is not a goal. I am embarrassed. "It's embarrassing what happened, how this goal stands in the Premier League.

"This league we say is the best in the world. I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. I don't care what [PGMOL] say, whatever the outcome. It is too late."

Before leaving the room. he added: "I feel sick to be part of this."

Havertz and Raya gambles not paying off for Arteta

When Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea for £67.5 million ($85.4m) in late June, reasonable questions were asked as to why and what Havertz’s role might be at Emirates Stadium. In the first week of November, after another inauspicious outing, we are still none the wiser.

Havertz was an elegant and destructive attacking midfielder when he broke through at Bayer Leverkusen, a classic No.10. But Arsenal don’t play with one of those. Operating slightly deeper in a No. 8 position, he appears entirely ill-equipped to deal with the midfield hustle and bustle, as evidenced by his ridiculous challenge on Longstaff.

He was also wretched in possession, with his 69.7% pass completion the lowest of any Arsenal outfield player. That’d be okay if he was boldly taking risks and asking questions of the opposition defence but Havertz did not create a single chance for a teammate. His solitary shot was blocked.

Another big transfer call by Arteta was bringing Raya in from Brentford. The loan fee is loose change compared to Havertz’s fee but the gamble that came with undermining Aaron Ramsdale’s No. 1 status was obvious.

The Arsenal boss’ desire to upgrade last season’s runners-up is admirable but Raya’s role in Gordon’s winner followed his very shaky performance at Chelsea a couple of weeks ago. During Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham, Ramsdale appeared devoid of confidence. Right now it looks like Arteta has made a mess where he didn’t previously have one.

Newcastle vs Arsenal live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: That's a huge win for Newcastle, whose players and coaches soak up the acclaim. Arsenal huffed and puffed but ultimately missed Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus badly as they lacked cutting edge. A physical, bruising and absorbing encounter leaves Manchester City top of the table and Tottenham as the only remaining unbeaten team in the Premier League this season.

90th minute+8: Another awful delivery from Trossard doesn't beat the first man. Newcastle are almost there.

90th minute+7: Time slipping away for Arsenal. Zinchenko's speculative strike is deflected behind for another corner.

90th minute+1EIGHT MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME starts with Livramento going into the book for a foul on Trossard. This free-kick is in a good position on the left-hand side, but it comes to nothing.

88th minute: Guimaraes hands off Vieira near the throat and is booked. He honestly got away with worse in first-half stoppage time. Newcastle's passion and competitiveness is getting them over the line, but they need to continue to channel it.

80th minute: Havertz drills one low from the left and Schar does superbly to clear behind. Trossard will take the corner.

79th minute: Ritchie the man on for Murphy.

78th minute: Murphy looks to get in behind, Zinchenko shoves him aside but the Newcastle man has dislocated his shoulder there. Ouch! He suffered a similar injury against Borussia Dortmund the other week, so there'll be another enforced change for Newcastle. Meanwhile, Vieira and Trossard replace Jorginho and Nketiah for the Gunners.

73rd minute: Newcastle see out a couple of Arsenal corners. Zinchenko comes on for White, with Tomiyasu switching to right-back.

68th minute: THE GOAL STANDS, NEWCASTLE LEAD 1-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Three close calls but they all go in Newcastle's favour. We've probably not heard the last of that. Should calm everyone down, at least...

67th minute: Now we're checking offside. Raya flying into no-man's land to deal with the cross means only Gabriel is between Gordon and the goal. But has the ball gone forwards, I don't think it has...

66th minute: We're checking a foul on Gabriel by Joelinton now. That'd be soft. But it must mean the ball is in play.

64th minuteGOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!! Anthony Gordon!!!!!

Well, that's a fairly effective substitution. Murphy shuttles down the right channel and has a shot. He shanks it and the ball runs to the corner flag. Is it out of play. We'll come back to that. Anyway, Willock retrieves the situation, crosses for Joelinton who can't finish but Gordon scrambles home.

62nd minute: Lovely move down the left by Arsenal. Trippier half clears and Rice sends an opportunistic header just wide. Double change for the hosts, with Murphy and Willock on for Almiron and Wilson. You'd expect the result of that reshuffle is Gordon playing three the middle, where he was effective against Manchester United in midweek.

54th minute: Wilson gets the better of Saliba on half way and now Almiron has room to move beyond the Arsenal defence. He slips a pass to Gordon but the Gunners hustle back into position and the England Under-21 winger can't get a shot off cleanly, with White sliding in to block.

53rd minute: Gordon cuts in from the left and is persuaded to venture further and further from goal by the Arsenal defence. He rounds things off with a backheel straight out of FIFA 2000. Not his best work.

50th minute: Good heavens, Havertz is late into a challenge again. Arteta surely can't let this continue. He almost took out Saliba that time as well.

46th minute: We're back underway. There's a change for Newcastle, with Livramento on for Burn, who's failed to shake that back pain. It means Trippier will shift over to left-back. Havertz and Guimaraes are refreshed and ready to go again.

Halftime: Well that all got a bit silly. An absorbing, good quality game that was low on chances has felt on the verge of spilling over ever since Havertz's rash challenge on Longstaff. Guimaraes in particular needs to have a big old calm down. Have one yourself if you like and we'll see you back here in 10 minutes.

45th minute+4: Guimaraes has totally lost the run of himself. After play stops he thrashes the ball at Havertz. Rice runs over to remonstrate and he gets s shove off the Brazilian. No booking. Everyone, Stuart Attwell included, needs to get themselves inside and re-assess.

45th minute+2: Martinelli cuts inside, Saka wants it at the far post but he takes the shot on. Pope reads it and gathers at the near post.

45th minute+1: Into four minutes of stoppage time and that's a pretty naughty from Guimaraes, who whacks his arm into Jorginho's head. He certainly seemed to know exactly what he was doing there, but VAR lets it go.

44th minute: Some nice play from Havertz, who turns and slips through a pass for Nketiah. Lascelles stands his ground to muscle the Arsenal forward out of the picture. That would have been a popular assist!

38th minute: It stays as a yellow. Lucky, lucky boy. To compound Newcastle's frustration and to inflame things further three home players are booked for dissent and other antics in the aftermath. Yellows for Schar, Gordon and Longstaff, who really did have every reason to feel aggrieved. It doesn't feel like Stuart Attwell has dealt with that situation proportionately.

37th minute: There we are, it boils over. Havertz, who has loitered on the fringes of this contest comes tearing over to leap into a challenge on Longstaff. That's very poor indeed. Attwell gets out a yellow card. The fact Havertz landed just before making contact has probably saved him, but could that be upgraded by VAR.

36th minute: Several players out there seem to be ticking at the moment. Arteta is very annoyed, Burn has a sore back but seems to have annoyed everyone in the process of getting it.

32nd minute: Saka is coming in for a bit of rough treatment. Burn brings the winger down for the second time in quick success. A committed of Arsenal players want a booking from referee Stuart Attwell but there isn't one forthcoming. Newcastle clear from the free-kick.

29th minute: Newcastle have players up for a set piece and work the ball for Guimaraes to float one into a packed penalty area. Arsenal are at sixes and seven and Wilson fires over when he really should do better. The flag was up, it wouldn't have counted but that's a warning for the Gunners.

28th minute: It's got a bit tetchy on the touchline over the past few minutes. Mikel Arteta and Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall have exchanged some views. Things were spicy between the benches during these games last season.

23rd minute: Arsenal play short again, Martinelli chips to the back post. Nketiah gets a head to the ball but he he crowded out and it loops harmlessly wide.

22nd minute: Jorginho takes aim from range again and booms it well over. It's been a compelling game so far, albeit almost entirely devoid of clear chance. Rice is trying to change that and wins another corner, this time on the left.

20th minute: Declan Rice has more licence with Jorginho in the Arsenal midfield and he dictates Arsenal's latest attack. Burn scrambles behind to deny Saka a shooting chance. The  England winger probably should have hit that first time on his weaker right foot. He swings in the corner and Newcastle clear slightly frantically.

15th minute: Saka's corner is worked short to Jorginho, whose shot from distance is blocked before it reaches the penalty area.

14th minute: Arsenal have pushed Newcastle back a bit and are matching their hosts blow for blow in terms of combativeness. Tomiyasu lashes at a shot from distance at it's deflected behind.

10th minute: Joelinton is coming back on after receiving some treatment after being on the end of a meaty challenge. Newcastle can ill-afford another major setback in midfield, especially on the back of Sandro Tonali's ban. Joe Willock is warming up, having starred at scored at Old Trafford in midweek.

6th minute: Almiron scampers down the right and Tomiyasu holds his ground well to get a challenge in. Longstaff swings in a follow-up cross and Raya booms a punch clear.

1st minute: We're underway. Newcastle start on the front foot and Gabriel dives to head a Trippier cross to safety.

4 mins prior to kickoff: Here come the teams. As you'd expect, there's some atmosphere for this kickoff under the lights at St James' Park.

10 mins prior to kickoff: City finished gorging on Bournemouth to the tune of 6-1, with Erling Haaland not scoring any and going off at halftime. What sort of response can Arsenal muster? They produced a stirring performance to win 2-0 in this fixture last season, although that man Odegaard was on target.

30 mins prior to kickoff: This really does feel like a big chance for Kair Havertz to prove his worth after a fairly underwhelming start to life at Arsenal. Odegaard's status as the team's main attacking midfield playmaker has made it feel like the Germany international has been shoehorned in at times. But with Jorginho and Declan Rice providing a solid base behind him and an attack lacking the injured Gabriel Jesus ahead of him, it's time to shine for the former Chelsea man.

55 mins prior to kickoff: Here's the Newcastle team. All things considered with their absences, it's pretty much what you'd expect.

1 hour prior to kickoff: The teams are in and the big news is that there's no Martin Odegaard, who is not fit enough for a place in the Arsenal matchday squad. That means another chance for Kai Havertz in midfield, while Takehiro Tomiyasu Takehiro is preferred to Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.

1 hr 20 mins prior to kickoff: Team news will be with us in around 20 minutes. Eddie Howe has a few high-profile absentees to juggle, with Sven Botman and Alexander Isak both still out. Sandro Tonali's 10-month ban for betting offences is now in effect. However, a heavily rotated Newcastle side was very impressive in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win at Manchester United. It will be interesting to see which of the standout performers from Old Trafford are retained today.

1 hr 40 mins prior to kickoff: Arsenal will aim to continue their unbeaten start to the season and leapfrog leaders Spurs with victory on Tyneside. Well, Spurs are top of the table at the moment. Champions Manchester City headed into the weekend in third place, behind Arsenal on goals scored. The Gunners might struggle to keep pace with Pep Guardiola's side on that front, given they're already 3-0 up at halftime against Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.

2 hours prior to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of a mouthwatering Premier League clash between Newcastle and Arsenal.

Newcastle vs Arsenal lineups, team news

Eddie Howe is still balancing his squad against some key injuries and the confirmation of Sandro Tonali's ten month ban for betting breaches in Italy.

Jamal Lascelles will continue to cover for Sven Botman in defence with Alexander Isak's absence leaving Callum Wilson to lead the hosts' attack.

Newcastle lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Pope — Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Burn — Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton — Almiron, Wilson, Gordon.

Arteta reshuffled his side for the trip to West Ham, but few did much to press their case in a 3-1 defeat. Takehiro Tomiyasu is preferred to Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, while Kai Havertz and Jorginho feature in midfield with Martin Odegaard ruled out of the matchday squad.

Arsenal lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tomiyasu — Rice, Jorginho, Havertz — Saka, Nketiah, Martinelli.
