Few teams have their seasons defined in October, but many Newcastle United fans will feel that was their fate during the 2021/22 Premier League season.

After years of stagnation, including relegations to the Championship, Newcastle were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium in the completion of a long-anticipated deal in October 2021.

Former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe became Magpies boss in November and turned a relegation-threatened side into one of the form teams in the division during the second half of the season.

That resulted in an 11th-place finish, and expectations that Newcastle's vast new-found wealth will allow them to aim even higher up the table this season. Here's what we know about their schedule:

Newcastle in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup

Newcastle had a miserable season in 2021/22 in the domestic cup competitions, suffering a humiliating FA Cup exit at home to third-tier Cambridge United and being knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in the second round at home to Burnley, who were later relegated from the top tier.

Tough taskmaster Howe will be demanding more from his revamped squad. Newcastle join the Carabao Cup in November and the FA Cup in January in 2023.

Newcastle Premier League betting odds

Newcastle's takeover and resurgence has also had a transformative effect on the odds of a team who were among the relegation candidates following a dismal, winless start to the 2021/22 season.

A top-six finish would be a significant turnaround but is realistic given the resources available to Howe.

Newcastle best & worst Premier League finish

The famously entertaining Newcastle teams of 1995/96 and 1996/97 gave the club their best-ever Premier League positions, finishing only behind Manchester United each time.

Newcastle have finished in the top five on four occasions since then, although there have been some dreadful seasons along the way.

The 2008/09 season saw the club relegated from the Premier League for the first time, and they also went down in 2015/16, although they bounced back immediately by winning the Championship the following season.
