Newcastle United have been embarrassed 8-0 by the A-League All Stars in a friendly match at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

With a second-string team missing all of their regular first-team players, the Premier League side were second-best throughout the first half, finding themselves 3-0 down at the break - and it could have been four or five goals.

The Magpies put in an improved performance early in the second period but once the A-League All Stars scored a fourth goal they dropped the hammer on Newcastle United, scoring five goals in a barnstorming second half.

The A-League All Stars stamped their authority on the match as soon as it started and it only took five minutes for the first goal to come.

Socceroos star Mat Leckie tried to wriggle his way clear in the penalty area, before the ball rebounded out to Ben Old, who lashed a shot in the corner.

Nicolas Milanovic then managed to hit both posts after a superb save from Mark Gillespie, but the Western Sydney Wanderers attacker was on the scoresheet soon after.

After Ben Garuccio clipped a cross toward the back post, Dylan Charlton failed to clear and Milanovic poked the ball under Gillespie for the second goal.

Another poor moment of defending from Newcastle gave the A-League All Stars a third goal as a poor clearance eventually forward its way to Adam Taggart, who swiveled and planted a shot in the bottom corner.

Old had another chance to score before half-time after he rounded Gillespie, who had come outside his area, but he couldn't fire into the empty net from a tight angle.

Two goalkeeper mistakes nearly gave both teams a goal each early in the second half, as Gillespie's blushes were saved by the offside flag after Leckie found the empty net, while Lawrence Thomas was rescued by a challenge from Rhyan Grant after he overran the ball.

Newcastle were much-improved in possession through the early stages of the second-half, but they undid their hard work with another ball giveaway.

Thurgate profited from a loose pass from the Magpies and played it straight to Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, with the striker turning and curling a shot into the bottom corner - much like Taggart's goal.

Stamelopoulos had a couple of long-range chances before he scored the fifth goal after a wonderful run by Bayern Munich-bound Nestory Irankunda.

Tolgay Arslan set Irankunda free down the right flank, with the electrifying winger storming into the box and picking out Stametelopoulos for an easy tap in.

Irankunda played a major hand in the sixth goal as he got to the byline, squared it to Bozhidar Kraev, with the Phoenix attacker rolling it to Jake Hollman, who could have walked it into an empty net but chose to pass it in.

Jordan Courtney-Perkins scored the seventh goal as the 90 minute-mark approached after prodding in a cross at the back post with not a Newcastle United defender in sight.

The final goal was scored by Wellington Phoenix attacker Bozhidar Kraev, who lifted a wonderful shot over the Newcastle United goalkeeper to complete the rout.

74th min: GOAL A-LEAGUE ALL STARS (Apostolos Stamatelpoulos)

Second half

Half time - Newcastle United 0-3 A-League All Stars

Newcastle's second-string team is struggling to compete in this match. It's 3-0 but easily could be four or five. Ben Old scored the first goal for A-League All Stars and has been ultra impressive getting forward. Maybe the Magpies can make some changes and get some synergy working in the second half.

44th min: Nearing half-time. It's all one-way traffic for the A-League All Stars. And there doesn't appear to be much experience on Newcastle United's bench either.

38th min: CHANCE A-LEAGUE ALL STARS

Old latches on to the long ball, he rounds Gillespie, who had come outside the area. But the Kiwi couldn't fire on his right foot into the empty net. The ball goes across the face of goal, it's picked up by Taggart, who tees up Thurgate, but the low shot is just wide.

36th min: Kuol blasts over the bar after a mix-up between Paulsen and Marcelo. The flag goes up to save Kuol's blushes. He should have hit the target though.

34th min: GOAL A-LEAGUE ALL STARS (Adam Taggart)

Another poor clearance from Newcastle is played by Thurgate straight to Taggart, who swivels and plants a shot in the left bottom corner. This could get ugly. Could easily be four or five already.

33rd min: Garuccio is found in space down the left by Leckie. He steps inside and unleashes a powerful shot straight at Gillespie.

31st min: Ben Old works the ball on to his favoured left but his curled shot is just wide. The All Stars are still dominating this match.

27th min: Turner-Cooke leaves the backpass short and Gillespie just manages to get it clear. That was nearly another goal.

26th min: GOAL A-LEAGUE ALL STARS (Nicolas Milanovic)

Garuccio clips the ball in towards the back post, Charlton misses the clearance and Milanovic pokes the ball under Gillespie. This could get ugly.

25th min: Kuol has Newcastle's first shot on goal but it's a tame shot straight at Alex Paulsen.

21st min: It's a match being played on the terms of the A-League All Stars. Newcastle have had barely any possession in dangerous areas.

17th min: POST A-LEAGUE ALL STARS

The A-League All Stars win the ball back after Old pressers Gillespie. Milanovic bursts into the area and his shot hits both posts before being cleared. Extraordinary that it's not 2-0.

14th min: CHANCE A-LEAGUE ALL STARS

O'Shea picks up the ball outside the box, he attempts to curl a shot in but Gillespie gets across to comfortably parry wide.

13th min: This Newcastle United team is struggling for cohesion at the moment.

8th min: The A-League All Stars are dominating. Leckie nearly gets on the end of a cross at the front post but an excellent challenge by Kieran Thompson gets the ball clear.

5th min: GOAL A-LEAGUE ALL STARS - (Ben Old)

Leckie tries to worm his way through to find space in the box to shoot. A Newcastle defender gets a foot on the ball. It comes out to Old, who sweetly strikes it in the bottom corner. The All Stars keep up their record of scoring in every game.

4th min: The A-League All Stars are doing all the early attacking. It's a Newcastle team missing all their stars. The only recognisable name is Kieran Trippier on the bench.

Kickoff: We are away at Marvel Stadium.
