Netherlands vs. Sweden results: Extra-time goal sends Dutch into World Cup Final vs. USWNT image

The Netherlands has done the unexpected.

The Dutch took down Sweden in the semifinals of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, winning 1-0 in extra time Wednesday. They move on to the championship match, where they will face the defending champions, the United States.

DeCOURCY: USWNT's keeper has the perfect answer for doubters

Netherlands-Sweden was a tale of Cinderella stories. The Swedes — making their first semifinal appearance since 2011 — were the lowest-ranked team remaining after ousting Germany. Holland was making its first appearance in the semifinal stage of the World Cup after advancing past Italy.

After 90 goalless minutes of regulation, the Dutch scored the game's only goal nine minutes into extra time. Jackie Groenen drove a low shot from about 20 yards out that landed past a diving Hedvig Lindahl into the Swedish net.

The USWNT booked its place in the final Tuesday, taking down England 2-1 in regulation. This is the Americans' third consecutive appearance in the World Cup final and their fifth final appearance overall.

The Netherlands, in just its second Women's World Cup appearance, will face the United States on Sunday, July 7, at 11 a.m. ET in Lyon, France. The match will be broadcast on Fox and available to be streamed on Fox Sports Go and fuboTV, which offers a free 7-day free trial.
