Mexico are favourites to seal a return to winning ways when they face Jamaica in their Copa America Group B opener in Houston.

El Tri wrapped up their preparations for the tournament with back-to-back defeats against Uruguay and Brazil, and have now lost three of their past four matches.

Jamaica can trump that in terms of losing runs. The Reggae Boyz are featuring at their third Copa, having competed in 2015 and 2016. Their record in the competition to date reads played six, lost six.

However, their head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson knows a thing or two about causing huge shocks in major tournaments. At Euro 2016, his Iceland team famously dumped England out in the Round of 16. They also held Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of that tournament, with Lionel Messi’s Argentina suffering the same fate when they faced the Nordic outfit at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Consecutive friendly wins over Panama, Dominican Republic and Dominica have provided a handy confidence boos before contesting a tough group that Ecuador and Venezuela complete.

Mexico vs. Jamaica lineups & team news

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez will captain Mexico, with Jaime Lozano expected to field Feyenoord youngster Santiago Gimenez in attack.

Proven international goalscorers are lacking in El Tri's squad, meaning Uriel Antuna — 13 goals in 61 caps — has an important role as a foil for Gimenez.

Mexico projected starting lineup (4-3-3): J Gonzalez (GK) — J Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Arteaga — E Sanchez, Alvarez, Chavez — Antuna, Gimenez, Vega.

Jamaica are without Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey, who opted against playing in the Copa America despite being called up as his dispute with the Jamaican Football Federation continues.

“In this case, he [Bailey] decided not to play for Jamaica. That’s his decision and that’s every player’s right to refuse to play for their nation. He opted to do that and that’s the end of the story for me, absolutely end of story. Now, I would just want everyone to focus on those players who want to play for Jamaica, and let’s put our support and focus on those players,” Hallgrimsson said last week.

West Ham's Michail Antonio and Fulham's Bobby Decordova-Reid mean there is still likely to be a heavy Premier League flavour to the forward line.

Jamaica projected starting lineup (3-4-3): Blake (GK) — Lowe, Hector, Bernard — Latibeaudiere, Palmer, Johnson, Anderson — Decordova-Reid, Antonio, Nicholson.

Mexico vs. Jamaica prediction

  • Score prediction: Mexico 2-0 Jamaica

Jamaica are not a one-man team but you sense they really needed Bailey's x-factor to cause a stir against sides of Mexico's stature at this tournament.

Lozano's men can shake off their patchy form and get off and running with a solid three points.
