Mexico vs. Jamaica lineups, starting 11, team news: Reggae Boyz must fill Bailey void at Copa America 2024 image

Jamaica will hope it's a case of seventh-time lucky when they line up against Mexico in their Copa America 2024 Group B opener in Houston.

It is the Reggae Boyz's third outing at the continental tournament and their record to date reads played six, lost six.

Mexico are understandably favourites to prevail but a run of three defeats from their past four matches means nerves might not be too far away for Jaime Lozano's side.

El Tri have twice been runners-up as guests at CONMEBOL's flagship event, missing out to Argentina and Colombia in 1993 and 2001 respectively. The more moderate aim of getting out of the group is the order of the day this year, with Ecuador and Venezuela completing the section and bringing solid World Cup qualification form to the table.

If Jamaica are to spring an upset, they will have to do so without their standout attacker. Below are the confirmed starting lineups for the match from Houston.

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez will captain Mexico, with Jaime Lozano expected to field Feyenoord youngster Santiago Gimenez in attack.

Proven international goal scorers are lacking in El Tri's squad, meaning Uriel Antuna — 13 goals in 61 caps — has an important role as a foil for Gimenez. Popular winger Hirving "Chucky" Lozano was left off the El Tri roster for the Copa America, as was legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico starting XI: (4-3-3): J. Gonzalez (GK) — J. Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Arteaga — Pineda, E. Alvarez, Chavez — Antuna, Gimenez, Quinones.

Injured: None
Suspended: None

Jamaica are without Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey, who opted against playing in the Copa America despite being called up as his dispute with the Jamaican Football Federation continues.

West Ham's Michail Antonio and Fulham's Bobby Decordova-Reid mean there is still likely to be a heavy Premier League flavour to the forward line.

The Reggae Boyz are missing injured MLS duo Andre Blake and Damion Lowe who are on the roster but not available for tonight's match. 25-year-old Jahmali Waite starts in goal.

Jamaica starting XI (5-3-2): Waite (GK) — Latibeaudiere, Lembiska, Pinnock, Bernard, Leigh — Decordova-Reid, Palmer, Gray — Nicholson, Antonio.

Injured: None
Suspended: None
