Former Kelantan midfielder, Jonathan McKain has announced his retirement from professional football, after spending more than 17 years in the game.

McKain, who has played for several clubs during his career, such as Brisbane Strikers, Adelaide United and Saudi Arabia's Al-Nassr, also featured for his country Australia 16 times, with his last appeareance for the Socceroos made back in 2011.

Announcing his retirement on his Twitter account, McKain said: “Today, I would like to announce my retirement from proffesional football after 17+ year career.”

“To all my former teammates, coaches clubs and fans, I’d like to say a massive thank you for an amazing ride and many unforgettable experiences. I have made so many lifelong friendships and met so many great people along the way.”

“But most of all I’d like to thank my family, who have been on this journey since the very beginning. I was just a young boy who dreamed to one day become professional footballer and play for the socecroos.”

“We did it. Together. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” said McKain.

McKain spent the last two years of his playing career at Malaysia Super League side Kelantan, joining the Red Warriors in October 2014.

He parted ways with Kelantan at the end of the 2016 season, claiming that the East Coast side still owe him unpaid wages, and reportedly joined Souths United, before deciding to retire from football altogether.
