Paris Saint-Germain was held to a 0-0 draw in a rivalry match against Marseille, but the Parisian side will take the point after going down a man with a little over a half-hour remaining in the match.

PSG remains in first place in the Ligue 1 standings after the result in Le Classique, a comfortable seven points from second-place Lens. Marseille lets a huge opportunity slip and remains in fourth place, still 10 points away from PSG, but with a game in hand. Marseille will make that game up on Wednesday at Nice, while PSG is back in action on Friday against defending champs Lille.

There were actually two goals scored in an entertaining first half, but they were both disallowed. PSG thought it had scored in the 14th minute after a Neymar cross was put into his own goal by Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car. An offside call scratched that strike, and it was the case again on a Marseille goal in the 21st minute. Pol Lirola was ruled offside on that instance.

PSG right back Achraf Hakimi was sent off in the second half after bringing down Cengiz Under, who was sprung free on goal. After checking the play on the monitor, the referee showed Hakimi the red card for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. That left PSG down to 10 men for over 30 minutes.

After the red card, Marseille brought in some attacking reinforcements, including American Konrad De La Fuente, who had the best opportunity of the game in the 77th minute when he whiffed on a wide-open volley. He created a few other chances on cutbacks off his trademark runs down the left, but Marseille could not create more scoring chances despite a strong showing by veteran midfielder Dimitri Payet.

PSG fielded its star-studded foursome in attack, and it looked promising early with Angel Di Maria's runs on the wing and combination play between Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Outside of a shot by Neymar which forced a save from Marseille, they were otherwise quiet. Mbappe had the lone second-half chance on a breakaway run six minutes from time, but he was foiled by a tackle from Marseille defender William Saliba that was accompanied by a lot of contact.

(All times Eastern)

Final: Marseille 0, PSG 0

92nd min.: Great run by De La Fuente again down the left, but his trademark cutback doesn't find a teammate near the penalty spot.

90th min.: Four minutes of stoppage time. Marseille is giving this one final go.

84th min.: Penalty for PSG? William Saliba with the slide tackle on Kylian Mbappe and the referee rules it a clean tackle at the edge of the box.

83rd min.: SUB - Gini Wijnaldum comes in for Neymar. PSG is leaving it to Mbappe and Messi to get a goal. A draw wouldn't be a terrible result.

78th min.: SUBS - Marseille brings on two more fresh players: Bamba Dieng and Gerson for forward Arkadiusz Milik and Cengiz Under.

77th min.: What a chance for De La Fuente! The cross comes in and he has a free shot on goal, but whiffs!

75th min.: De La Fuente with a nice cutback move and he chips the ball toward the center of the area, where Under fires the volley and it's deflected for a corner. Marseille looks like the team most likely to score at this point.

73rd min.: Play stops after a fan chases Messi on the field while he was leading an attack. For a moment the fan looked like a Marseille player defending Messi.

71st min.: SUBS - Marseille is going for it. Papa Gueye in for center mid Kamara and U.S. international Konrad De La Fuente enters for the right back Valentin Rongier.

65th min.: Chance for Marseille! Payet with the cross from the left and Valentin Rongier makes the penetrating run in the box, but his header bounces wide right.

60th min.: SUB - PSG brings in Thilo Kehrer for Angel Di Maria to cover for Hakimi's absence.

59th min.: Payet's free kick for Marseille is curled over the goal. Not even close.

57th min.: Red card to Hakimi! After checking the play at the monitor, the referee decides to give the red to Hakimi for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity, but the foul is spotted just outside the box. Under would have been in on goal without that foul.

54th min.: Looked like a penalty for Marseille! Cengiz Under is sent through on a breakaway and he goes down on a push from behind from the recovering Achraf Hakimi. Under falls on the ball and the referee calls the hand ball. The referee is taking a look at the monitor.

49th min.: What a dive by Dimitri Payet in the box! He wanted a penalty kick, but the referee doesn't give it. Payet deserved a yellow there, but gets away scot free.

46th min.: We're underway in the second half. There's not much between these two sides. Should be a compelling 45 minutes.

Halftime: Marseille 0, PSG 0

45th min.: SUB - Just 10 seconds before the end of the first half, PSG brings on Idrissa Gueye for the injured Marco Verratti who has an issue with his hip.

42nd min.: It's that Messi-Mbappe connection we've been talking about. Nothing comes of it this time.

41st min.: Cengiz Under with a threatening run in behind, but he's offside although Achraf Hakimi was there to stop him when he got his shot off.

35th min.: What a block by Marseille left back Caleta-Car on a marauding run by Achraf Hakimi. On the corner kick, the ball winds up on the foot of Messi, who shoots right at the 'keeper.

31st min.: Wild sequence in front of the Marseille goal. Mbappe beats Saliba, he puts the ball in the middle, but goalkeeper Pau Lopez stops Neymar and the ball is cleared.

28th min.: Before this PSG corner, fans get rowdy and the referee stops the match for a message to be delivered to fans in the stadium. There's a message on the video board.

27th min.: Angel Di Maria put through in behind again on the left and his cross is deflected and Messi of all people heads on goal. The goalkeeper needs to tip it over the bar.

21st min.: Milik scores for Marseille, but this is also scratched for the narrowest of offside calls. After a giveaway in their own half, Lirola sends the cross which reaches Milik, who finishes. But Lirola was offside on the through ball wide right to him.

18th min.: CAUTION - Another yellow for a Marseille member, this time for right back Valentin Rongier for clattering into Nuno Mendes.

17th min.: We're barely 15 minutes into the game and Marseille coach Jorge Sampaoli gets a yellow card for protests.

14th min.: Goal PSG! But it's disallowed! It was an own goal by Caleta-Car. Nuno Mendes won a header in the attack and Neymar sends a cross into the box which Caleta Car clears into his own net. But there was an offside on the play.

11th min.: Marseille turnover and Messi immediately looking for Mbappe in the box, but the Frenchman can't collect. These two have shown there's some chemistry when they can find each other.

10th min.: Angel Di Maria's cross from the left side just misses the head of Kylian Mbappe at the far post. Di Maria operating on the left side.

5th min.: Strong start for Marseille at home, which was to be expected. PSG trying to keep some possession to quell the enthusiasm.

3rd min.: Milik with a great chance early for Marseille but he can't get the ball on target.
