Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Old Trafford to kickstart 2024 in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag's side twice led the match but Ange Postecoglou's injury-ridden squad fought impressively to take a hard-earned point on the road. United remain far away from the top four and are eight points behind Arsenal, who occupy fourth place, but that gap could increase as the Gunners have a game in hand.

Rasmus Hojlund gave United the lead after just three minutes, capitalising on a counter-attack from a Spurs corner. Bruno Fernandes' sensational pass found Marcus Rashford, who dribbled into the box. Despite Destiny Udogie's effort to stop Rashford, the ball ricocheted to Hojlund, who blasted the ball into the roof of the net, making him United's leading goalscorer with seven goals in all competitions this season.

SPURS 2 Richarlison 19', Bentancur 46'

Lineups:

Man United starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Evans, Dalot — Mainoo, Eriksen — Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford — Hojlund.

Tottenham starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Uodgie — Skipp, Bentancur, Hojbjerg — Johnson, Richarlison, Werner.

Despite taking the lead, it was Spurs that dominated and were duly rewarded for their response to falling behind. Pedro Porro's inswinging corner found the head of Richarlison as the Brazilian beautifully glanced his header to the far post, which beat both Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot, who were both defending on the line.

Rashford then restored United's lead moments before the first half concluded. His composed finish inside the box was his first goal at Old Trafford for United in all competitions this season. The 26-year-old had had 32 shots at home prior to finding the back of the net.

But only 50 seconds into the second half and Postecoglou's men had levelled it up. It was a goal that United have conceded on far too many occasions this season as Timo Werner cut the ball back to Bentancur, who roamed into the box unmarked before finding the back of the net after easily drifting past Jonny Evans.

Werner signed for Spurs earlier this week on loan from RB Leipzig and showed reasons for both optimism and pessimism. He was utilised more as a left-winger and still managed to get caught offside on multiple occasions but looked a threat each time he was on the ball.

After Spurs' second equaliser, there was a real possibility that United were going to give up their record of never losing a Premier League game at home when leading at halftime. They sure came close, though, as Spurs looked the likelier of the two sides to go on and win the match.

That said, substitute Scott McTominay missed a golden chance to snatch all three points with seconds of injury time remaining, heading over the bar when unmarked in the six-yard box following Alejandro Garnacho's fine cross.

Spurs' next test comes in the FA Cup as they host champions Manchester City in two weeks. United will travel to Newport or Eastleigh to see if they can advance to the fifth round. But for now, a winter break for both sides.

Man United vs Tottenham updates, highlights, and commentary

FT: It ends all square at Old Trafford.

95th minute: McTominay! It's a poorly-timed jump and he was unmarked in the box but heads over the bar. That was their best chance, and possibly the last.

90th minute: There are five minutes of added time. Neither side appears to want to commit too much going forward. A point will please both.

85th minute: Fernandes' free-kick hits the wall.

77th minute: Spurs are still looking the likelier of the two sides to grab a winner here.

70th minute: Well played by Martinez. Johnson appeared to have a free run down the right flank, but the Argentine defender stepped in and picked his pocket to clear the danger.

63rd minute: Lisandro Martinez returns to action for United. He's brought on for Evans, who looked as though he was feeling some discomfort.

62nd minute: Wan-Bissaka finds himself the furthest man forward for United and is challenged on the edge of the box but the ball makes its way to McTominay who drags an effort wide.

58th minute: Eriksen makes way for Scott McTominay.

51st minute: Bentancur sure enjoyed that one!

46th minute: GOAL! 2-2! The second half is underway and Spurs have levelled it up within a minute. Bentancur drifts past Evans, who was slow to react, and he hammers home past Onana.

HT: What a first half that was. United go into the break with a one-goal advantage but you get the sense they'll need another one or two to secure the three points today.

47th minute: Romero heads off the bar! Mainoo was marking him and it was an incredible mismatch.

45th minute: Werner has a glorious opportunity to level the game up as Dalot essentially invites the shot. Luckily for the United defender, Werner appears to have left his shooting boots in Germany.

40th minute: GOAL! 2-1! Hojlund combines with Rashford and the Englishman finds the bottom right corner with a composed finish. They don't necessarily deserve it, Spurs have been the better side since equalising but that doesn't matter now.

UK:

39th minute: Off the post! Udogie is a lucky man. Rashford's intension was to find Garnacho at the back and Udogie tried to clear with his head but he almost turned it into his own goal.

36th minute: Hojlund picks the pocket of Van de Ven who was messing about at the back and finds Fernandes in the box but the Portuguese midfielder's touch was poor and Spurs snuff out the danger.

29th minute: Penalty appeal for United but Garnacho goes down far too easily in the box.

22nd minute: Welcome back to the Premier League, Timo Werner. He drifts into the middle from the left onto his preferred right foot and blasts the ball into row Z.

19th minute: GOAL! 1-1! Richarlison with the glancing header from a corner and it had been coming. Spurs are rewarded for their efforts since going behind.

UK:

16th minute: Rashford is getting the better of Porro every time down the left and almost finds Hojlund on the cutback but Romero does well to make the block.

11th minute: CLOSE! Werner finds himself open at the far post and gets his head to it but Evans clears well. It goes out for a corner and Bentancur rises highest to meet the ball with his head which Dalot clears off the line.

7th minute: It's a deep ball in from Eriksen to the back post and Rashford makes good connection on the volley but it narrowly goes wide. This has been a great start for United.

6th minute: Eriksen goes across to the travelling support where he prepares to take a corner and they applaud the former Spurs man. Nice moment.

3rd minute: GOAL! 1-0 HOJLUND! What a start for United. Rashford does brilliantly on the left and manages to cut inside but is tackled by Udogie. Unfortunately for the Spurs defender, it falls to Hojlund who takes a touch before smashing past Vicario.
