Manchester United will be bidding for a sixth win in seven Premier League games when they host Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Red Devils followed up their 6-3 humiliation at the hands of Manchester City with battling away wins over Omonia Nicosia in the UEFA Europa League and Everton in the top flight.

They hosted the Cypriot side on Thursday, when an injury-time goal from Scott McTominay secured a 1-0 win after they had been thwarted by a redoubtable defensive display and a brilliant performance from visiting goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, a Man United fan.

They were 4-1 winners in this fixture last season, when Cristiano Ronaldo marked his Old Trafford homecoming with a double, but that was against a very different Newcastle side. In their post-takeover era and with Eddie Howe in charge, this match represents a good opportunity for the Magpies to record their first away win over the 20-time champions of England since 2013.

Manchester United vs. Newcastle United lineups

Cristiano Ronaldo starts in place of Anthony Martial, while Marcus Rashford drops to the bench and Christian Eriksen is out of the squad altogether. The hosts are still without Donny van de Beek (muscular), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (undisclosed) and Harry Maguire (thigh), while Scott McTominay, who scored the injury-time winner against Omonoia this week, is suspended.

Goalkeeper David de Gea is set to receive a special presentation on the pitch as he prepares for his 500th appearance for the club.

Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Shaw — Casemiro, Fred — Antony, Fernandes, Sancho — Ronaldo

Manchester United subs: Heaton (GK), Mainoo, Rashford, Lindelof, Malacia, Elanga, Iqbal, Pellistri, Garnacho

Striker Alexander Isak (thigh) is close to a return but will not be available at Old Trafford, while Emil Krafth is back in Sweden recovering from a knee injury. There was a major blow on Saturday when it emerged that Allan Saint-Maximin has suffered a setback after returning to action against Brentford and will also miss the game in Manchester.

Newcastle United lineup (4-3-3): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn — Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton — Almiron, Wilson, Murphy

Manchester United vs. Newcastle United betting odds

Given Newcastle's poor record at Old Trafford — it's been nearly nine years since they last won a league game at this ground — the bookies make Man United favourites for the three points.

Still, Newcastle's thrashing of Brentford last time out, and the Red Devils' difficulty in taking their chances against Everton and Omonia, make a low-scoring draw something of a tempting option.
