Crystal Palace are aiming to become the first team to beat Manchester United in the Red Devils' first game of a Carabao Cup defence when they make the first of two visits in five days to Old Trafford on Tuesday.

United have won 40 of the previous 63 meetings between the teams, although their 2-1 win against the Eagles at Old Trafford in February was only their second victory in six editions of the fixture.

Palace have not reached the latter stages of the competition since they made the semifinals in 2011/12, and they rescued a 4-2 win at second-tier Plymouth Argyle in the second round, falling 2-0 behind before scoring all of their goals during the second half, including a hat-trick for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

A 1-0 win at Burnley brought United's three-game run of defeats in all competitions to an end in the Premier League on Saturday, and they are entering the Carabao Cup at this stage because of their involvement in the UEFA Champions League.

Erik ten Hag's side recovered from falling behind twice to beat Aston Villa at home at this stage of last season's competition, then proceeded to keep clean sheets in all of their subsequent matches on their way to lifting the trophy, including their 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Man United vs Crystal Palace: best bet

  • Pick: Under 2.5 goals
  • Odds: +110 (BetMGM)

Four of Palace's seven matches in all competitions this season have produced two goals or fewer, while United have only scored more than once in one of their six domestic games. There were also fewer than three goals in all four editions of the fixture before United's 2-1 win in February.

Palace had won on their previous two visits and been unbeaten at United in three before their current two-match losing run there, and their odds of +220 to qualify — the tie goes to penalties if it is level after 90 minutes — could also appeal.

Man United vs Crystal Palace prop bet

  • Pick: Jean-Philippe Mateta to score
  • Odds: +333 (BetMGM)

Palace manager Roy Hodgson suggested after the draw with Fulham that top scorer Odsonne Edouard is struggling with a hamstring injury, meaning that his side are likely to rely on Mateta to produce more of the heroics he did in scoring three times in 23 minutes at Plymouth in the previous round.

United, who are depleted in defence because of injuries to the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez, have conceded 14 goals in six matches since their fortunate 1-0 win at home to Wolves in their opening fixture. Their clean sheet at Burnley also depended on goalkeeper Andre Onana tipping Zeki Amdouni's header away before the striker beat the keeper but not a post with a first-half strike.
