WEMBLEY, LONDON — Norman Whiteside, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. The two current Manchester United squad members on that list joined Whiteside and Ronaldo as the only players in club history to score as teenagers in an FA Cup final.

Against all the odds, their two goals saw United storm to a 2-0 lead against Premier League champions Manchester City in the first half before putting a defensive masterclass in the second half.

Andre Onana's woeful error allowed City substitute Jeremy Doku to reduce the arrears in the 87th minute but United held out for a deserved triumph.

United's togetherness and fight has been missed on too many occasions this campaign but they had it in spades here for a slice of sweet revenge after failing to prevent City's treble bid in this fixture last season.

It was reported by The Guardian 24 hours before kick-off that Erik ten Hag would lose his job as manager of United no matter the result and after chatting with fans across the country on the way to Wembley, many appeared to suggest that would be the right call.

What will happen in the coming days and weeks is to be determined, but one thing is for sure, Ten Hag has won two trophies in two years as Man United boss.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United's new footballing structure will have to weigh Saturday's euphoria against a dismal Premier League campaign where United finished eighth — their lowest finishing position since 1990 and 31 points behind Pep Guardiola's champions.

From the first whistle, it appeared we were in for an entertaining cup final. United looked to replicate what City did to them in last year's final as Bruno Fernandes put Marcus Rashford in on goal inside the opening 30 seconds. But Kyle Walker recovered beautifully to beat his fellow England international to the ball and Stefan Ortega came to collect.

City dashed up the other end immediately and Lisandro Martinez shoved Erling Haaland to the floor inside United's box but the referee waved play on. Guardiola fumed on the touchline, the first outburst of an increasingly frustrating afternoon for the Catalan coach.

After an opening half-hour of City dominance, it was United who took the lead through Garnacho. Guardiola's defence dealt with a couple of previous attempted deep balls over their heads until Diogo Dalot tried it again. Josko Gvardiol appeared in control as he looked to calmly head the ball back to Ortega but the City goalkeeper had come too far and Garnacho pounced to slot the ball into an empty net.

United's half on the east side of Wembley erupted as they chanted "Viva Garnacho" and City fans were left silenced.

Travelling to the game you struggled to find a United fan that was looking forward to this final, never mind thinking about lifting the trophy. That goal sent shockwaves of belief through a red sea inside the home of football and it transferred onto the players. United then had the ball in the back of the net seven minutes later through Rashford after Garnacho dribbled in behind the City defence again but was offside on this occasion.

Moments later United did have their second. Garnacho again found space down the right and this time played a cutback pass to Fernandes, who tucked a cute ball across the box for Mainoo to slot a first-time shot beyond Ortega.

Guardiola made changes at the break as he hooked Mateo Kovacic and Nathan Ake to introduce Doku and Manuel Akanji. City immediately took control in the second half and Erling Haaland hammered the bar with a left-footed strike.

He then made another substitution as Kevin De Bruyne made way for Julian Alvarez. These subs turned the tie on its head as it brought endless waves of City attacks on United's penalty area. Walker forced Onana into a cracking save as he let fly from distance but it was tipped wide before the United goalkeeper celebrated Alvarez slotting a glorious chance past the post.

Doku caused all sorts of problems down the left flank and gave City that moment of hope as he pulled one back with less than three minutes to play. He cut onto his right foot and struck past Onana, who could only palm the ball into this side netting. After a fine individual display up until that point, the Cameroon international should have done much better.

It set up an incredibly nerve-wracking finish for both sets of fans but United held on, something that has not been said much this season, and celebrated wildly at the final whistle.

23rd minute: Garnacho gets the better of Ake down the right but in the end he is outmuscled as he looked to drive into the box. United have been much better in the last five minutes or so.

22nd minute: City then look to counter but Dalot brings down Haaland and somehow avoids a yellow card.

21st minute: Ten Hag's side have their first chance since the opening minute as City get caught on the ball in defence but United can't quite get a clear shot off as Kovacic just gets back in the nick of time to prevent Fernandes on the six-yard box.

18th minute: United having to do a lot of concentrating off the ball and lots of defending so far.

14th minute: Guardiola's side are looking good down the left with Gvardiol and Kovacic combining well to take the ball deep into United's half. A few early crosses have been cleared well by United.

Four of his six goals against the team from the other side of Manchester have put United ahead in the match. The question is though, will he start today's game?

2 hours 30 mins before kickoff: The modern version of Manchester United are hardly unfamiliar with off-field distractions ahead of major games. Nevertheless, reports emerging that Erik ten Hag is set to be relieved of his duties however today's final plays out hardly makes for ideal preparation. Louis van Gaal famously made light of such a predicament when United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the 2016 FA Cup final thanks to a stunning extra-time goal from Jesse Lingard. If this is Ten Hag's curtail call, can he say farewell in a similar style?

3 hours before kickoff: Welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the 143rd FA Cup final. Manchester City face rivals Manchester United in the showpiece for a second year in a row. Man City vs Man United lineups, team news

City's absentee is goalkeeper Ederson, who missed the final match of the season against West Ham due to a fractured eye socket that will also keep him out of Brazil's Copa America squadStefan Ortega would likely have started in goal anyway as he is the usual keeper for domestic cup matches.

Guardiola must decide whether to stick with Jeremy Doku or bring in another ball-playing midfielder such as Mateo Kovacic.

Man City predicted lineup: (4-1-4-1, right to left): Ortega (GK) — Walker, Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol — Rodri — Silva, De Bruyne, Foden, Doku  — Haaland.

Man City predicted subs: Ake, Kovacic, Stones, Grealish, Alvarez, Nunes, Carson, Bobb, Lewis

United's long injury list is finally clearing but there are still plenty of question marks over the starting lineup.

Ten Hag confirmed on May 23 that Harry Maguire would not be available despite earlier hope that the centre-back would have recovered in time from a muscle injury. However, fellow defenders Victor Lindelof should be available, as will striker Anthony Martial, who could make his final appearance in a United shirt. Luke Shaw is not expected to be ready for the match.

Ten Hag started a 4-2-2-2 system that secured back-to-back wins over Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion last week, but with Rasmus Hojlund fully rested having only played 38 minutes in that game, he'll be expected to come back in the XI.

Man United predicted lineup: (4-2-3-1, right to left): Onana (GK) — Dalot, Casemiro, Martinez, Wan-Bissaka — Mainoo, McTominay — Diallo, Fernandes, Garnacho — Hojlund.

Man United predicted subs: Rashford, Eriksen, Diallo, Evans, Bayindir, Antony, Martial, Lindelof.
