Liverpool Team News: Injuries, suspensions and line-up vs Sunderland image

Liverpool will be determined to begin 2017 in the same fashion they ended last year - with a victory to enhance their title ambitions as they visit Sunderland.

The Reds can make it five league wins on the spin, reducing Chelsea's advantage to three points, with Antonio Conte's side only playing on Wednesday.

The Merseysiders ousted Manchester City 1-0 in the late fixture on New Year's Eve, while Sunderland suffered a 4-1 defeat at Burnley with David Moyes describing their performance as "useless."

LIVERPOOL INJURIES

Jordan Henderson was substituted at Anfield on Saturday evening due to pain in his heel and will sit out the game.

Philippe Coutinho and Joel Matip will still be unavailable for selection as they recover from differing ankle issues.

Marko Grujic continues his rehabilitation from a tendon injury.

LIVERPOOL SUSPENSIONS

The Reds have no suspensions to contend with, but Dejan Lovren is one yellow card away from a ban.

LIVERPOOL POTENTIAL STARTING LINE-UP

Given the short turnaround between games, Klopp will rely on the information of the medical team before considering his options. The limited time to train and work on tactics makes it harder to rotate, so the Reds boss could opt for minimal changes depending on fitness levels.

It will be interesting to see whether Daniel Sturridge starts at the Stadium of Light as he was left on the bench against City. There is the opportunity to play him in tandem with Divock Origi, which has worked well for Liverpool in the past, but the German could opt to simply use the 21-year-old as the focal point again.

With Klopp himself still unsure about his selection, it is hard to predict the hand he'll play as recovery times differ for individuals. The feeling is he'll alter as little as possible before properly rotating for Sunday's FA Cup hosting of Plymouth.

SUNDERLAND DOSSIER

Third from bottom with just one win in five, and having conceded seven in their last two games, Monday's hosts badly need to reverse the slide.

Moyes will undoubtedly look to "park a double-decker bus" again after restricting Liverpool's attack until the 75th minute in last month's meeting at Anfield.

The Reds won 2-0, but were made to work for the result with Klopp revealing the Black Cats were "the most defensive team" he's ever faced.

Lamine Kone, Victor Anichebe and Jason Denayer are recent injury casualties.
