A year ago, Major League Soccer had never seen a club win the CONCACAF Champions League title, unable to break the stranglehold that Mexican teams maintained over this competition.

Now, they could go back-to-back as LAFC take on Club Leon in the two-legged final, hoping to follow up the trailblazing example set by the Seattle Sounders last year.

These two clubs couldn't be in more different positions. LAFC are smack in the middle of their season, challenging for the top spot in the Western Conference and just recently knocked out of the US Open Cup by rivals LA Galaxy a week ago.

Leon, meanwhile, haven't taken the field since being eliminated from the Liga MX Clausura playoffs back on May 7. They finished sixth in the standings, but upset Tigres in the semifinals of the CCL in early May.

Neither club has ever won a North American continental competition, so a new champion will be crowned after the second leg on June 4.

Leon vs LAFC projected lineups & team news

42-year-old Mexican icon Rodolfo Cota serves as goalkeeper for Club Leon, still going strong with the club since joining in the summer of 2018.

The attacking line is led by 25-year-old Chilean Victor Davila who has been a consistent goal scoring presence, netting in the club's liguilla defeat to Atletico San Luis back on May 7, which is the last time the club took the field.

Leon projected starting lineup (4-4-2): Cota (GK) — B. Castillo, Barreiro, Frias, Tesillo — Mena, Ambriz, L. Romero, E. Hernandez — Davila, Alvarado.

LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo has rotated his side heavily in the last few months to keep his entire squad fresh.

Star striker Carlos Vela has sat for two straight matches, but should return to the lineup for this huge continental match, supported by in-form attackers Nathan Opoku and Denis Bouanga. Midfielder Kellyn Acosta has been recovering from a leg injury and is back in training, and while he may not start, he should be available off the bench.

The lineup will not feature Maxime Crepeau, who is still recovering from his broken leg, or Giorgio Chiellini, who has been missing since mid-April with an injury. Jesus Murillo is also sidelined, and while his leg injury probably would have kept him out, it doesn't matter as he is suspended for this first leg due to yellow card accumulation.

LAFC projected starting lineup (4-3-3): McCarthy (GK) — Hollingshead, Maldonado, Long, Palacios — Cifuentes, Sanchez, Tillman  — Opoku, Vela, Bouanga.
