Mexico were once far superior to the United States when it came to men's soccer, but that is no longer the case.

As the two get set to face off in an international friendly in Guadalajara, for Mauricio Pochettino's first sample of the CONCACAF rivalry, the United States can point to a run of recent success in the battle for continental supremacy.

The USA has gone five years without defeat to border rivals Mexico, with El Tri unable to secure a triumph of any kind over their northern neighbors in quite some time.

The Sporting News takes a look at the recent results between the two nations, including the last time Mexico tasted victory against their bitter rivals.

Last time Mexico beat USA

The United States have gone unbeaten against Mexico across five straight matches now, dating back to a 3-0 friendly defeat on September 6, 2019.

The USA's current five-match streak is their longest unbeaten run against Mexico since they went six games unbeaten through 2011-2015, although that streak included four friendlies, while the current streak includes only one.

The Americans have actually had regular success against Mexico over the past decade, including another five-game unbeaten run from 2005-2009 (two friendlies in that span), plus an eight-game run with just one defeat spanning from 2000-2004.

A victory or draw for the USMNT over Mexico in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semifinal on June 15 would see the USA go five straight competitive matches against Mexico unbeaten for the first time in their history.

USA vs. Mexico recent results

The U.S. has had relative success over Mexico over the past 10-plus years, including its most recent streak. Overall, since 2010, the USA has won nine and drawn six against Mexico, losing just five times during that span.

Mexico did claim some key victories, winning the 2019 Gold Cup and 2015 CONCACAF Cup finals against the Americans. El Tri also snatched a World Cup qualifying win on U.S. soil in 2016.

But the USA's recent seven-match unbeaten streak against Mexico has included three finals, as the Americans hoisted the Nations League title twice plus a Gold Cup trophy in that span.
