Manchester United go into the final weeks of 2021/22 desperately searching for a positive end to an inconsistent season at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's exit, coupled with the uncertainty over temporary boss Ralf Rangnick, has deepened fan frustration as performances on the pitch have stuttered.

Rangnick faces a battle to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, with early exits from both domestic cup competitions making the Champions League their only chance of silverware.

United's lack of trophies in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era is well documented, and whoever is in charge when the first ball is kicked next season will be under immediate pressure to win something.

When is the last time Man United won a trophy?

Despite enduring a mixed relationship with the United fan base, Jose Mourinho is the last manager to win a trophy with the Red Devils, after clinching the EFL Cup and the Europa League back in 2016/17.

Swedish icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice in the EFL Cup final, to seal a 3-2 win over Southampton at Wembley. Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were on target in their 2-0 Europa League final victory over Ajax in Stockholm.

Since the start of the 2017/18 campaign, United have clinched a top-four finish in three of the following four seasons, but silverware has eluded them, having suffered defeats in the 2017/18 FA Cup final and 2020/21 Europa League final.

Which trophies have Man United won?

Under Ferguson, United established themselves as the dominant force in English football, with their 20 top-flight league titles edging out rivals Liverpool (19) in domestic terms.

United are the second-most successful club in FA Cup history, lifted the famous old trophy 12 times, behind only Arsenal (14).

However, neither competition has been kind to United in recent years, with their last Premier League title win in 2012/13 and their most recent success in the FA Cup coming in 2015/16, under Louis van Gaal.

United's record in the EFL Cup puts them third on the all-time list, behind Liverpool and Manchester City, with their last success under Mourinho in 2016/17.

In Europe, United's treble win of 1998/1999 included becoming kings of Europe for the first time since 1967/68, before Ferguson's side memorably won it again in the Moscow rain in 2007/08.

How many finals have Man United made?

Domestically, United have a strong record of reaching finals, with 20 FA Cup final appearances - one behind Arsenal - and nine EFL Cup finals.

Mourinho's Europa League win was United's first European final appearance since Moscow in 2007/08. In fact, the Portuguese coach led the Red Devils to their only win in their last four continental showpiece occasions, having suffered defeats to Barcelona (twice) and Villarreal.

The Red Devils have enjoyed some success in other international competitions down the years, with Mark Hughes' brace winning Ferguson a first European title in the 1990/91 Cup Winners' Cup.

Brian McClair's goal then secured the European Super Cup, via a 1-0 win over Red Star Belgrade, with a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the 1999 version.

The treble opened United up to global competitions, as Roy Keane sealed a first ever Intercontinental Cup triumph, over Palmeiras, before defeats in the 2008 and 2017 Super Cup to Zenit Saint Petersburg and Real Madrid, respectively.
