Former Ghana defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has predicted another disappointment for the Black Stars at the next Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

After a series of near misses, the Stars are hoping to end what will be a 37-year wait for an Afcon gold at Cameroon 2019.

And although the team came mightily close by reaching the semifinals of each of the last six events and playing in the final in 2010 and 2015, Kuffour reckons 2019 will still not be Ghana's time.

“Our target must be 2021," the former Bayern Munich centre-back said.

"The current crop cannot win in 2019.

“I think we need to do more, we need to prepare very well and make sure we are ready.

“It is not easy as we think. Every country will be going for the title and they will be preparing very well and so we must also do well to prepare.”

Ghana are currently the third most successful nation in the history of the Afcon, having claimed the title on four occasions.

The Black Stars initially won it back-to-back in 1963 and 1965, before laying hands on the royal diadem again in 1978 and 1982.

Kuffour was a member of Ghana’s side that lifted the 1991 Fifa U17 World Cup and also won two silver medals at the 1993 Fifa U17 and Fifa U20 World Cups, as well as Bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

At senior level, he featured in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and at the 2006 World Cup.
