Liverpool has  found support for its Premier League title bid from an unlikely source, with former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan tipping the Reds to mount a sustained challenge.

The Uruguayan did not experience too many highs during a two-year stint at Old Trafford, but he did pick up a useful habit of netting against the Red Devils’ fiercest north-west rivals – with those efforts earning him his very own terrace chant at Old Trafford.

Forlan is, however, prepared to put past differences to one side as he casts an eye over the battle for top-flight supremacy in England.

Klopp: We know we're a really good team

Liverpool leads that particular pursuit at present, but holds just a narrow one-point advantage over the chasing pack.

The Reds do have players on top of their game, though, and Forlan believes the performances of key men such as Philippe Coutinho and the stability offered by Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield dugout will see the Reds go close in their bid to end a lengthy wait for domestic dominance.

He told Emirati paper The National: "Liverpool have not won the league since 1990, but after Leicester City won the title last season, I see no reason why another side not used to winning it cannot do the same.

"Liverpool just need to keep going and have lucky with injuries.

"Having no European football helps, and their players have gelled together well.

'Coutinho feels really good at Liverpool'

"They do not have a player in the class of Luis Suarez, but Philippe Coutinho is very good.

"Klopp has an advantage over [United boss Jose] Mourinho and [Chelsea manager Antonio] Conte as he has been at his club for longer.

"His players are confident and have scored more goals than any other team in the Premier League.

"My only concern for them is that they concede too often - letting in more than any other team in the top seven."

Liverpool has netted 30 times in its 11 Premier League fixtures so far, but have been breached on 14 occasions.

Klopp will be well aware of the need to address defensive frailties, and will get his next shot at bolting the door when his side travel to Southampton on Saturday.
