Swansea City striker Jordan Ayew says new manager Carlos Carvalhal has tasked him with taking up leadership duties in their fight to beat relegation in the Premier League.

Following a poor start to the season, the Jack Army currently sit bottom of the table, a situation that prompted the recent appointment of Carvalhal as replacement for the misfiring Paul Clement.

The Portuguese's introduction looked like a masterstroke on Saturday as in his first game. He masterminded a priceless 2-1 away victory over Watford - a match in which Ayew registered an 86th minute equaliser.

"The gaffer [Carvalhal] came in and asked me to be the leader in the dressing room," the Ghana forward told BBC Sport.

"I try to do that, I try to show it on the pitch as well as with my running, with my commitment, with my fighting spirit and that's what I try to do now.

"I don't like to lose because I think I can do much more, I can give more to the team."

Jordan then shed light on Saturday's dramatic comeback win.

"It's a massive feeling," said the 26-year-old.

"It was incredible that we got rewarded because we really worked hard. It's a good step forward.

"The manager told us to do the basic things. He said if you don't run you come and sit down next to me [on the bench].

"I don't like to lose because I think I can do much more, I can give more to the team.]"

Swansea next host Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

Jordan's Saturday strike took his season goal tally to three in the topflight.
