Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson will captain England in its upcoming World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

Rooney dropped for Slovenia game

Interim manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed Rooney will be among the substitutes on Thursday evening, though claims the decision was tactical rather than based on form.

And Henderson, who took over as Reds captain from Steven Gerrard in 2015, will lead out the Three Lions as they look to make it three wins from three in Group F.

"I've been very impressed with him," Southgate said of the former Sunderland man. "What's stood out for me is that he's captained a club where he's had to take over from one of the biggest players in English football.

"In this group he has a voice, an opinion, and ideas of what we need to work on, and good tactical awareness. He's used to the responsibility of captaining a big football club."
