Manchester United’s £52.5 million ($70m) move for Brazil international midfielder Fred has been confirmed by his former boss at Shakhtar Donetsk, Mircea Lucescu.

Goal confirmed on Monday that the 25-year-old had arrived in England to undergo a medical.

With a deal close to completion, the Red Devils appear to have secured themselves a top target for the summer transfer window.

Lucescu, a man who helped to mould Fred into the player he is today, certainly believes that a deal will go through.

He feels United have pulled off quite a coup, with a top talent heading to World Cup 2018 considered to be ready for the step up to a Premier League stage.

Lucescu, who is now in charge of the Turkey national team, told reporters ahead of a friendly clash with Russia: “I’m really pleased Fred has completed his transfer to Manchester United, I am proud of him.

“When I signed him at Shakhtar, Taison and Bernard were playing in his position.

“I transformed his position, giving him a more defensive role.”

Fred joined Shakhtar from Internacional in 2013.

He has gone on to take in over 150 appearances for the Ukrainian club, scoring 14 goals.

United have now snapped him up to add extra steel to the spine of their side, with the Brazil international set to complement and compete with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.
