It was Frank Acheampong’s first game since playing for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations and he made it count by scoring a first-half brace for Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The game ended 2-0 in favour Anderlecht.
The forward struck two clean goals that were enough to give the hosts a healthy lead going into the second leg of their round of 32 encounter against Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg.
Both goals were assisted by Nicolae Stanciu, first in the fifth minute and then on 31 minutes. The 23-year-old was substituted on 60 minutes and replaced by Alexandru Chipciu.
Acheampong was a rumoured target of Liverpool during the January transfer window and could get new suitors after this impressive showing in Brussels.
He has scored four goals in all competitions this season.
He was deployed in the left back role by coach Avram Grant at the Afcon after injury befell Abdul Rahman Baba. He held down his place well as Ghana reached the semi finals before falling to eventual winners Cameroon.
