Kylian Mbappe and France begin their summer Euro 2024 journey with a pair of friendlies against Luxembourg and Canada, the first taking place on Wednesday in Metz.

After winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the final of the 2022 FIFA competition, France are considered amongst the top favorites to take home the title this summer.

However, since winning a title in 2000, France's recent history at the Euros has been largely disappointing. They reached the final in 2016 on home soil, but otherwise, have not made the semifinals once, most recently bounced in the Round of 16 four years ago at the hands of Switzerland.

Ranked 87th in the world, Luxembourg are not participants at this year's Euro finals, and France will be expected to win comfortably to avoid causing panic

France vs. Luxembourg prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: France (-2000)
  • Score prediction: France 2-0 Luxembourg

A host of players in the France squad did not have a good finish to the club season and thus will need to get back to their best form. That includes star Kylian Mbappe, who had a rocky conclusion to his PSG career.

Still, they are far better than this Luxembourg side, even as the Red Lions secured impressive wins over Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland in 2023. They were blasted by Portugal (6-0 and 9-0) last year and lost to Georgia 2-0 back in March, so there's precedent for them not reaching the standard necessary to compete in this match.

France vs. Luxembourg best bet

  • Pick: Olivier Giroud to score and France to win
  • Odds: -140 (BetMGM)

At 1/3 odds, Kylian Mbappe's value is in the sewer for this game, given how poorly he finished the club season. However, Olivier Giroud concluded his European club career well as he rode out his contract at AC Milan, and set to retire from the national team after the Euros, he'll want to cement his Blues legacy.

Expect a big summer from Giroud, who remains the focal point up front for France even as Mbappe dazzles out wide. The 37-year-old bagged a brace in the first of two appearances against Luxembourg in his career back in 2017, so he has a history against this opponent.

Adding France to win only juices the odds a tiny bit, but if Giroud finds the net, it would be an utter shock to see France then concede and fail to win, so any little boost helps.

France vs. Luxembourg prop bet

  • Pick: Under 3.5 total goals
  • Odds: +120 (BetMGM)

It's entirely possible that France go gangbusters in this game, but in all likelihood, Les Bleus won't be motivated to pour on the goals, especially in a friendly where players will be substituted in and out throughout the second half, which often stunts matches.

Luxembourg will prioritize defensive solidity, and look to keep a lid on the game knowing the chances of winning are slim. This will be a test for France against a low block, and knowing the second half of the match could lack flow, there's value in this pick at plus odds amidst a match that lacks value in most categories.
