Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan's former club Modena have officially been dissolved and expunged from the Lega Pro this week by the Italian FA, officially bringing to an end their 105-year history in football.

The club had been battling with financial crisis, failing to honour their last four league games, prompting the football association to strike.

Gyan, 31, previously featured for the Canarani while they were in the Serie B between 2004 and 2006 on loan from Serie A side Udinese, and scored 15 goals in 53 appearances.

"Modena have been formally excluded from the Lega Pro, officially bringing to an end their 105-year history," an official statement read.

"The Canarini, who spent a total of 13 seasons in Serie A, had failed to fulfill their most recent four league matches in Italian football’s third tier and were yesterday declared bankrupt.

"According to Lega Pro rules, forfeiting four matches in a season results in automatic expulsion from the League.

The club had been locked out of their Stadio Braglia home for failure to pay certain outstanding bills.

"And the players’ refusal to take to the field for yesterday’s fixture with Santarcangelo, having not been paid for several months, sealed the club’s fate.

“It has been confirmed that Modena’s League record this season will now be expunged, with results against the Canarini no longer counting in the standings," the statement added.

Aside Gyan, Maxwell Boadi Acosty, Nana Hardy, Amidu Salifu, Prince Besea and Aremeyaw Salifu are other Ghanaians who have previously had stints with Modena.
