Former Stoke City defender Dionatan Teixeira has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 25.

The Brazilian centre-back, who had been playing for Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol, reportedly passed away in his homeland on Sunday while playing a game of football with friends. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Teixeira signed for Stoke in 2014 after a trial and spent three years at the bet365 Stadium. After a season on loan with Fleetwood Town, Teixeira made just two appearances for Stoke's senior side before being released in January 2017 and snapped up by Sheriff. He made 10 appearances as Sheriff lifted the Moldovan league title last season.

The Potters expressed their condolences with Teixeira's family after hearing the news of his passing.

Chief executive Tony Scholes told the club's website: “Dionatan was a hugely popular member of our squad and it’s difficult to comprehend that he has passed away at such a young age.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his young family and friends at such a difficult time.”

Sheriff also released a statement, saying the entire club had been shaken by the news.

"The whole team of FC Sheriff, from simple workers to the management of the club, is shocked by the tragic news. The pain of loss is great.

"We express our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of Dionatan. He will remain forever in our hearts."
