When Rafa Benitez was surprisingly made Everton's new manager in June 2021, fans might have expected the man who won the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool to stay for at least a season in spite of their misgivings.

As it was, Benitez inadvertently enhanced his status as a Reds legend by presiding over a dreadful first half of the season for Liverpool's arch-rivals.

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard replaced Benitez at the end of January but his underperforming squad only avoided a final-day relegation decider with a nervy victory in their closing home game of the season.

Can Lampard lead Everton out of their malaise? How is their schedule shaping up? Here are the details:

Everton in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup

A serial trophy winner with Chelsea, Lampard was furious after his side lost 4-0 at Crystal Palace in the 2021/22 FA Cup quarterfinals, accusing his players of giving their opponents a "free pass" to the final four. Former winners Everton are back in the competition in January.

There were warning signs for Benitez when Everton lost on penalties at Championship club QPR in the Carabao Cup second round in September. Their 2022/23 campaign in that competition starts in November.

Everton Premier League projection & odds

Predicting how Everton will resurface from a season most fans will have been keen to see the back of is tricky. Results under Lampard were patchy as they clung to safety, although victories over Manchester United, Chelsea and Leicester City proved to be crucial results.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was Player of the Season and Lampard will be optimistic if he can bring the best out of the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. A return to the top half of the table would be a relief to supporters.

Everton best & worst Premier League finish

Everton have been ever-present in the Premier League since its inception in 1992 and, although it might not have Lampard crowing, their 16th-placed finish in 2022/23 meant they avoided equalling their worst ever finishes in the division.

The most dramatic of those was in 1993/94, when Everton came back from 2-0 down in their final game of the season to win 3-2 and survive by a point.

Future Manchester United boss David Moyes also oversaw a 17th-placed finish in 2003/04, although his team ended six points above the relegation zone.
