Orlando City has acquired Dom Dwyer from Sporting Kansas City in a blockbuster trade, the MLS teams announced Tuesday.
The newly capped United States national team striker lands with the Lions in a deal that could land Sporting KC a total of $1.6 million in allocation money, a new record for MLS.
Sporting KC will receive $400,000 in general allocation in the deal, $500,000 in targeted allocation money and another $700,000 of future allocation money based on performance incentives in the trade.
“Dom has been a great player on the field and a tremendous ambassador off it," Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes said in a statement. "We thank him and wish him nothing but the best."

The 26-year-old Dwyer previously played with Orlando City on loan in 2013 when the club was in the USL, and helped the team win the league title that season. Overall, he has played in 128 MLS regular-season contests since being selected 16th overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, scoring 57 times.
“Dom adds tremendous strength to our attack. He brings speed, energy and strong technical ability,” Orlando City general manager Niki Budalic said in a statement. “He has grown as a player over the years into one who is a threat whenever he’s on the field.”
Donovan knows what U.S. is missing
The English-born Dwyer recently made the switch to represent the U.S. in international competitions. He scored two goals in three appearances this summer for the national team, all starts, including delivering a goal in his debut in a friendly against Ghana.
This season, Dwyer has scored five times in 15 appearances for Sporting KC.
