The Italian domestic knockout tournament, the Coppa Italia, is in its 75th season of competition.

Down to its final eight participants, the Coppa Italia returns to action this week, with the four games spread across three midweek days.

Nearly all the top clubs in Italy remain alive in the competition, and a number of exciting matches have already been played. In the Round of 16 alone, four of the eight games required extra time to resolve, and stunningly, none of those games went to penalties, as four clubs found extra-time winners.

This year's competition is truly about the giants of Italian soccer. No lower-division competitors remain, as Serie B side Lecce — the only lower-tier club to reach the Round of 16 — was eliminated by Roma.

All remaining clubs hail from Serie A, with 12th-placed Sassuolo the lowest-standing club left. Relegation-threatened Genoa pushed AC Milan to extra time in the Round of 16, but fell 3-1, while newly-promoted Venezia was dropped by Atalanta in the previous round as well.

2022 Coppa Italia quarterfinals

There are some intriguing matchups as the competition is down to the final eight participants. Seven of the top eight sides in the Serie A table are still alive, including league leaders Inter Milan and storied side Juventus.

Serie A's second-place team, Napoli, is the most notable absence from the quarterfinals, knocked out in the Round of 16 by Fiorentina in extra time.

Notably, new Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, who transferred from Fiorentina during the January window, will not be able to participate in the competition through to the final, since he is cup-tied to his former club. Vlahovic is tied with Nedim Bajrami and Leonardo Mancuso as the top scorer in the competition with three goals each.

Below are the matchups for the 2021-22 Coppa Italia quarterfinals, which are set to take place between Feb. 8-Feb. 10. If matches are tied after 90 minutes of regulation, 30 minutes of extra time will be played. That will be followed by a penalty-kick shootout if the deadlock persists.
