In the 64th edition of the Copa Libertadores, Brazilian side Flamengo looked to defend its continental crown in the tournament that determines the 2023 club champion in South America.

As is often the case, Brazilian and Argentinian clubs dominated the 2022 tournament, with the entire quarterfinal round made up of clubs from those two footballing giants. That's the case again this year, although not to the same extent, as Brazilian and Argentine clubs made up five of the eight quarterfinalists and all four of the semifinalists in 2023. Naturally then, a Brazilian club (Fluminense) will meet an Argentine club (Boca Juniors) in the final on November 4.

Flamengo won the title, but fell short in their attempt to repeat, dropping out in the Round of 16 this year.

This year, the likes of Nacional (Uruguay), Independiente del Valle (Ecuador), Olimpia (Paraguay), Atletico Nacional (Colombia), and others from outside those two nations hoped to break that stranglehold. Olimpia managed to reach the quarterfinals, along with Deportivo Pereira of Colombia and Bolivar of Bolivia.

The Sporting News brings you an updated look at the tournament, with info on how to watch matches, fixtures, results, highlights, teams qualified, and much more.

Copa Libertadores 2023 Knockouts

Only 16 teams advanced from the group stage into the knockout stage: the top two teams from each of the eight groups.

The draw for the knockout stage took place on July 21, with the group winners listed as the seeded teams and drawn against group runners-up as unseeded teams.

Knockout stage play began on August 1, with the final happening on November 4 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All rounds will be two-legged matchups, except for the final which will be contested in one single match. The Copa Libertadores final was played across two legs until 2019, when the change was made to a one-off match.
