Major League Soccer has announced that Philadelphia Union midfielder Chris Pontius has won the 2016 MLS Comeback Player of the Year award.

Pontius tied his career high in goals with 12 while adding six assists in his first season with the Union, helping his club to a playoff appearance.

The 29-year-old was limited to 29 total appearances with D.C. United in 2014 and 2015 after struggling to overcome a hamstring injury which required several surgeries.

Frank Lampard of New York City FC came in second for the award, followed by Orlando City's Kevin Molino.
