Chelsea player contracts: When every deal expires, including summer free agents image

After sanctions imposed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich by the UK government, there is now greater scrutiny on the situation at the club regarding player contracts.

At present, Chelsea aren't able to buy or sell any players, which means there will be more focus on the individuals currently at the club.

In addition, the Blues aren't able to offer any new contracts, which could lead to them losing some key players this summer.

Here's an assessment of when each player's contract expires.

Chelsea players out of contract

The most pressing issue for Chelsea is that they have three defenders out of contract at the end of June in Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta.

If Chelsea were to lose all three players without being able to replace them, it would be a significant blow.

Chelsea players out of contract this summer:

  • Antonio Rudiger
  • Andreas Christensen
  • Cesar Azpilicueta
  • Saul Niguez (loan expiring)
  • Charly Musonda Jr
  • Jake Clarke-Salter
  • Juan Familia-Castillo
  • Danny Drinkwater

Newcastle are interested in signing Rudiger, according to The Telegraph, with Real Madrid having also been linked with him.

Christensen appears to be heading to Barcelona, as reported by Marca, and the Denmark defender has already agreed to a move. Azpilicueta could also end up at Barcelona.

Saul Niguez seems set to return to Atletico Madrid once his loan deal finishes, while Charly Musonda Jr. will become a free agent after a lengthy Chelsea career that has yielded just seven competitive first-team appearances.

Jake Clarke-Salter, who is on loan at Coventry City, is also out of contract this summer, as is Juan Familia-Castillo, who is on loan at Charlton Athletic. Experienced midfielder Danny Drinkwater is set to be released when he returns from his loan spell at Reading.

When other Chelsea player contracts expire

Depending on how long the sanctions last, there will also be some focus on players whose deals are up in the summer of 2023, with N'Golo Kante, Thiago Silva, Jorginho and Marcos Alonso among those who fall into that category.
