The Round of 16 of the 2022 UEFA Champions League proved compelling with several of the favorites going through -- Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Liverpool and defending champions Chelsea -- with a handful of surprise teams also advancing.

Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Benfica managed to oust the likes of Juventus, Manchester United and Ajax on the road in their Round of 16 second legs.

All the Round of 16 results follow below. Each home-and-home series was played over two legs, and the team with the most goals scored at the end of the second leg advanced to the quarterfinals.

There is one major rule change to keep in mind for these knockouts: For the first time since 1965, there is no away goals tiebreaker in the case that the aggregate-goal series are tied after 180 minutes of action. Teams will head straight into a 30-minute extra time session, followed by a penalty-kick shootout if the deadlock persists.

It's worth noting that the group winners got to host the second legs as a perk for finishing as the top team in their group (hosting potential extra time or penalty-kick sessions is deemed an edge). But the home teams went 2W-5L-1D in those second legs. Not much of an advantage.

UEFA Champions League quarterfinal draw

There will be a quarterfinal draw held on Friday, March 18 that will also establish the rest of the bracket through to the final.

There are no seedings involved in that draw and, unlike the Round of 16, teams from the same country can be drawn against one another.

MORE: Winners and losers of the Champions League re-draw

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played with the same rules as the Round of 16: The team with the most aggregate goals after two legs advances. If teams are tied on goals after the second leg, they will play 30 minutes of extra time and, if the deadlock persists, a penalty kick shootout will determine the winner. The away goals tiebreaker is no longer in use.

  • Quarterfinals: April 5-6, April 12-13
  • Semifinals: April 26-27, May 3-4
  • Final: May 28, 2022 (Saint-Denis, France)
