The stakes are high as the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League has reached the final four stage of the competition. Three of the four remaining clubs are no strangers to the Champions League final, and two of the four have never won the trophy.

Record 13-time winners Real Madrid are through to the final four after surviving a thriller against defending champions Chelsea, and their reward is a matchup against last year's runners-up and current Premier League leaders Manchester City. The Citizens barely got by Real's intra-city rivals, Atletico Madrid, in the previous round. The series got off to a spectacular start with a 4-3 instant classic in the first leg.

Meanwhile, a second Spanish side Villarreal shocked the world in the quarterfinals by ousting German champions Bayern Munich in dramatic fashion with a late goal in the second leg. The only other time the Yellow Submarine reached the semifinals of this tournament was in 2005-2006, when they lost out to an English team (Arsenal). There's an English club in the way this time, too, in the form of Liverpool, which overpowered Benfica 6-4 on aggregate in the quarterfinals.

The Champions League schedule through to the final follows below. Each semifinal home-and-home series is played over two legs, and the team with the most goals scored at the end of the second leg advances to the final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, just outside Paris.

There is one major rule change to keep in mind for these knockouts: For the first time since 1965, there is no away goals tiebreaker in the case that an aggregate-goal series is tied after 180 minutes of action. Teams will head straight into a 30-minute extra time session, followed by a penalty-kick shootout if the deadlock persists.

UEFA Champions League final

The Champions League final will be played at Stade de France in Saint-Denis just outside Paris, France in May. It was originally scheduled to be played in St. Petersburg, Russia, but was moved after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

There are clubs from four different countries still remaining in the competition, but what's for sure is that a French club will not be playing the final in its home nation, as both remaining French sides in the knockouts — PSG and Lille — were eliminated in the Round of 16.
