With Saturday's UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid tipped to be a close contest, The Sporting News has gone back into time to see all the matches that have lasted longer than the regulation minutes.

Sixteen finals since the inaugural Champions League/European Cup tournaments have gone to extra time to decide who is the best team in Europe.

Both of this year's finalists — Liverpool and Real Madrid — have been involved in extra time during Champions League, with neither losing once the game is undecided after 90 minutes.

Los Blancos have been involved in the two most recent finals that have gone further than regulation time, defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties in 2015-16 and by the 120 minutes in 2013-14.

They also won the first-ever final that went to extra time against Milan in 1957-58.
