After suffering against opposition who had been labelled tricky when they lost 2-1 to Brighton on the opening day, Manchester United face another match that could be described in the same terms when they visit Brentford in their second Premier League match of the season.

Second-half goals from Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva gave the Bees a creditable comeback at Leicester in their opener, starting their second season in the top flight with a 2-2 draw that suggested they can still prosper without Christian Eriksen.

Inspirational since signing for Brentford in January, Eriksen joined United after his short-term contract at the Gtech Community Stadium ended and endured a forgettable day on his competitive debut for his new club, for whom the midfielder initially began in the centre of a toiling attacking three.

Can United produce the substantially-improved performance fans are anxious to see, or will Brentford emulate Brighton's win against the odds and prolong a miserable start for new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag? The Sporting News has the details on how to watch the game.

Brentford vs. Manchester United predicted lineups

Thomas Frank did not report any injuries after his side secured their first point of the campaign thanks to a mentality the Brentford manager hailed as "crazy."

Frank is likely to be considering starting DaSilva following his impact as a substitute against Leicester. Record signing Keane Lewis-Potter, who arrived for £16 million from Hull in the summer and was introduced four minutes before Brentford's first goal of the season, could also be in contention.

Brentford predicted lineup (4-3-3): Raya (GK) — Hickey, Jansson, Mee, Henry — DaSilva, Norgaard, Janelt — Mbuemo, Toney, Lewis-Potter

Ten Hag will surely be tempted to shuffle his pack after United's latest poor display against Brighton, although he could still be without Anthony Martial, who missed the match through a hamstring injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo is engaged in a much-publicised stand-off with United as he targets a move to a Champions League side. The 37 minutes the Portugal captain completed as a substitute against the Seagulls were almost as many as he played throughout preseason, but Ten Hag was understandably ready to turn to the 2021/22 top scorer as his side sought a way back in to the game.

United are negotiating with Juventus to sign Adrien Rabiot, who could be set for his debut if he joins a team with painfully evident weaknesses in midfield.

Manchester United predicted lineup (4-3-3): De Gea (GK) — Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw— Eriksen, Fred, Fernandes — Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford

Brentford vs. Manchester United betting odds

Despite their struggles, United are warm favourites with bookmakers to earn their first win under Ten Hag, making Brentford the value bet.

Brentford's only defeat in their final five home games of 2021/22 came courtesy of a last-gasp Leeds goal in a fixture that meant far more to the visitors than Frank's side. They had kept four consecutive home clean sheets before that game, winning three times during the run.

In the first meetings between the teams since 1975, United won 3-1 at Brentford in January and 3-0 in the return fixture at Old Trafford in May.
