Warren Zaire-Emery's second-half equaliser ensured Kylian Mbappe and his Paris Saint-Germain teammates will play in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 in February 2024 courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Group F winners Borussia Dortmund.
After a breathless first half when Niklas Sule produced a brilliant clearance to keep Mbappe's finish off the line, Karim Adeyemi slotted in to give BVB the lead from Niclas Fullkrug's pass after PSG lost possession in a dangerous area.
Mbappe's menacing run down the left was instrumental in Zaire-Emery's leveller five minutes later, the academy product finding space inside the box to fire in a crucial finish as Newcastle United spurned the chance to seize second place with a 2-1 home defeat to AC Milan.
Bradley Barcola curled a shot against a post before the break but Dortmund had more of the accurate efforts during a first period containing 15 attempts at goal, Marco Reus forcing PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the first of a succession of saves.
Borussia Dortmund vs PSG result
Score | Goal scorers | |
BVB | 1 | Karim Adeyemi (51') |
PSG | 1 | Warren Zaire-Emery (56') |
Marius Wolf drilled a shot wide from inside the PSG penalty area in space, and Mbappe's left knee was adjudged to have been offside after he hammered a low shot into the far corner of the excellent Gregor Kobel's net with 15 minutes remaining.
Dortmund and PSG will discover who they will play in the knockout stage when the draw for the Round of 16 is made on December 18.
The German and French giants will be joined in the draw by Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, Inter Milan, Lazio, RB Leipzig, Manchester City, Napoli, PSV, Porto, Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.
Elsewhere in the group, the Rossoneri's comeback victory meant they claimed a UEFA Europa League knockout-round playoff spot, consigning Newcastle to elimination from Europe.
Dortmund and Paris look to Champions League knockout stage
Fifth in the Bundesliga and out of German cup competition the DFB-Pokal, the Champions League is arguably Dortmund's greatest focus of a season in which they have not always domestically matched their performances in the most prestigious competition in Europe.
After losing to PSG on Matchday 1, Edin Terzic's side went on a hugely impressive run that started with a goalless draw against Milan and proceeded to successive wins over Newcastle and a 3-1 victory at the Italian club, leaving them with one of the best defensive records of any group-stage team.
"You can't play against a team like Paris without the opponent getting chances," Terzic said after an absorbing, end-to-end match in which both teams squandered excellent chances, with the first half alone carrying enough of them to have produced several goals.
"We worked hard to win this group. Now we have to continue to play consistently well in the next round."
Their status as group winners means Dortmund will be seeded alongside many of the most feared teams remaining in the Champions League, ensuring they will steer clear of an immediate match against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Should they play as they did against PSG, few of their potential opponents in the next round will be obvious favourites to beat them.
"This game today was very important for us, even though we had already qualified for the next round," said midfielder Marcel Sabitzer. "We did very well, even if Paris had some good counterattacking chances.
"They have very high quality and that's why it's almost impossible to stop them. In the end, we finished first in this incredibly tough group. Now we have to go one better in the next round."
Zaire-Emery beats France stars to Champions League record
Zaire-Emery became the youngest French scorer in the history of the Champions League to continue a sensational year for the 17-year-old.
It may have been a 14-0 win at home to Gibraltar, but the midfielder scored on his France debut in November and is on the crest of a wave after scoring a vital goal for his club.
His feat of youth with that strike has edged him ahead of the French Champions League age record previously held by Karim Benzema and Mbappe.
"I pushed on and the ball finally came to me," he told Canal+ of his goal, when the Dortmund defence parted in front of him, split by its attempts to prevent Mbappe's run.
"I tried to do my best. I try to get as high up the pitch as possible, all while making defensive contributions. I was fortunate that the ball fell to me and I'm happy to have scored."
Only three of the 16 teams in the knockout stage have conceded more than PSG in this season's Champions League, and Zaire-Emery was understandably keen to focus on their attacking qualities.
"Our aim is to score as many goals as possible but the most important thing is to create chances and that's exactly what we're doing," he said.
"We will work on our efficiency in front of goal and try to perform as well as possible in both the Champions League and Ligue 1."
