The Round of 16 at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations wrapped up on Wednesday to set up the quarterfinal field.

Equatorial Guinea made it past Mali on penalty kicks, while Mohamed Salah and Egypt also used a shootout to knock out the Ivory Coast. They joined tournament favorite Senegal and African power Morocco into the quarterfinals. The Gambia and host Cameroon, along with Tunisia and Burkina Faso also made it into the final eight.

All the first-place and second-place finishers of the group stage qualified for the knockouts along with the four best third-placed teams which also made it through to complete the field of 16 teams. Shockingly, African power Ghana and defending champion Algeria were both eliminated in the group stage.

The run by tiny Comoros came to an end in the Round of 16 in its first-ever appearance at the AFCON tournament. It was the last team to make it through as a third-place finisher. Here's how the third-place finishers ranked:

3rd-Place Team Group PTS GP W L D GF GA GD
1. Cape Verde- X A 4 3 1 1 1 2 2 0
2. Malawi- X B 4 3 1 1 1 2 2 0

X = Qualified to Round of 16 | E = Eliminated

Nigeria finished with the most points in the group stage, but the Super Eagles were upset by Tunisia in the Round of 16. Ivory Coast also won its group, but it didn't count for much in its knockout round elimination via a penalty-kick shootout against Egypt.

Below is the complete knockout round schedule, including the matchups in the quarterfinals and the rest of the tournament.
