Biggest point spread upsets in NCAA Tournament history image

What happened to Michigan State on Friday afternoon was historic, and certainly no one saw it coming. But this isn't the first time a massive favorite has laid an egg in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans' loss to Middle Tennessee in the first-round was among the largest point spread upsets in March Madness, coming in behind only Missouri, South Carolina and Iowa State's losses as No. 2 seeds. Tom Izzo's group closed at -16.5 at most Nevada sports books and fell, 90-81, to the Blue Raiders.

No. 15 seed Coppin State closed the game on a 38-18 run and blew out South Carolina, 78-65.

Hampton beat Iowa State 59-58 in an ugly game. It was the Pirates' sixth season in Division I.

Iowa State is back on the list, 13 years later. No. 14 UAB held on late to win 60-59 despite trialing by double digits.

Dunk City dropped 54 points to win 78-68 and take the nation by storm for that one week in 2013 as a 15 seed.
