Dear readers,
Beginning Sunday, March 15, the Sporting News app will be discontinued for iOS users.
Many factors went into this decision, but it came down to something simple, which was using all our available resources to best serve fans. As we improve our ability to tell stories in a digital age, we plan on doing so with experiences worthy of your time and attention. Our iOS app, long featured in the Newsstand on Apple devices, no longer meets that standard.
When unveiled in September 2011, the Sporting News iPad app was the 4.5-star rated jewel of our product offering. Fans could download our best work each day free of charge, going “cover to cover” in a way longtime readers of our magazine know well.
But as we have evolved, so too has digital media. Screen sizes have shifted, user habits have modified and potential avenues to bring fans content have widened. Meanwhile, our app — which once sat on the cutting edge of digital sports media — has outlived its usefulness for most readers. The resources needed to maintain it are now best used to improve other Sporting News digital offerings.
We hope our core app users will follow the same great content to sportingnews.com, which is built for your desktop and mobile devices and will over the next quarter become a sleek, responsive site. For SN content in your social media feeds, join the more than 600,000 who have liked us on Facebook and the more than 130,000 who have followed us on Twitter.
As our digital audience grows, we’re committed to delivering best-in-class experiences for readers. Whether that’s video, statistics, news, analysis or a future app that combines all of those elements in an innovative fashion, we’ll continue our push toward one-of-a-kind content offerings that bring fans closer to the games they love.
