Ahead of the Lions' friendly against Afghanistan and Asian Cup qualifying match against Bahrain, head coach Varadaraju Sundramoorthy has said that he may utilise youngster Irfan Fandi as a defender.
The Home United FC player has strong physique and has played club football as both a striker and a defender, but most recently he has made his mark as more of a centre-back.
Sundramoorthy told The Straits Times that the former Young Lions man has been improving as a defender.
"He has a good physical presence, is strong in the air, a ball winner and fits into the role of a central defender. I have confidence in Irfan that he is a good central defender.
"I believe that Irfan is a hard-working player. Although he is still young, he is consistently improving his play as a central defender."
Singapore will take on Afghanistan at the Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Stadium in Qatar on Friday, before playing Bahrain in their Group E 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers opener at the Bahrain National Stadium next Wednesday.
