Manchester City's rising star Julian Alvarez is set to leave the Premier League champions for Atletico Madrid.
The move, which could be worth up to £82 million ($104.3m), comes as the Argentine striker seeks more playing time and a sunnier climate.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that the initial deal is worth £64 million ($81.4m), with significant add-ons that could bring the total to around £82 million ($104.3m). This marks a substantial profit for City, who signed Alvarez from River Plate for just £14 million ($17.8m) in 2022. In his time at Manchester City, Alvarez scored 26 goals and made 18 assists in 103 appearances.
Alvarez has often found himself playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland, which has been a significant factor in his decision to move.

The main reasons behind the Julian Alvarez move
Football Insider reports that Alvarez’s decision to leave City was influenced by his desire for more playing time and a better climate. The weather in Manchester has been a notorious factor for several players, and Alvarez was no exception. Additionally, he was not interested in joining another Premier League side, despite interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.
Pep Guardiola was reportedly keen to keep Alvarez but has maintained his policy of allowing players who wish to leave to do so. This move marks a significant change for both Alvarez and Manchester City, with the young striker looking forward to new opportunities in La Liga.

Man City’s replacement plans
As Alvarez prepares to sign a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid, Manchester City are already looking at their options for replacing him. Romano hinted that City might not just look for another striker but could also consider wingers or even a false nine setup when Haaland is unavailable.
“There have been significant developments on a few major deals,” Romano said. “Man City will now look at options to replace Alvarez, for sure. It could be a striker, but I would not be surprised if they end up considering also wingers and maybe playing with a false nine when Erling Haaland will not be available.”
Alvarez’s move to Atletico Madrid is expected to be finalized soon, with Diego Simeone eager to integrate him into the team. This transfer is seen as beneficial for both clubs, with City making a substantial profit and Atletico gaining top talent.
