Manchester City will be keen to bounce back with a win when they face Newcastle United on Saturday after their Premier League unbeaten run was halted by Liverpool last week.

Pep Guardiola's side suffered their first defeat in 23 matches when they lost 4-3 to the Reds in an exhilarating encounter at Anfield.

Despite the defeat, City are still comfortably ahead of the chasing pack at the summit of the table, with 12 points separating them from their nearest rivals Manchester United.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are enjoying an upturn in fortunes and have put together a four-game unbeaten streak, extricating themselves from the relegation quagmire - temporarily at least - in the process.

As well as seeing their unbeaten run in the league come to an end, Guardiola has been left disappointed in the transfer market after conceding defeat in the pursuit of Alexis Sanchez.

Failure to land one of his long-standing targets comes as a blow to the Catalan, whose team, while still formidable, could probably do with an injection of fresh talent into their ranks.

Indeed, with a busy schedule ahead of them for the remainder of January - including two cup ties - it would have taken some of the pressure off Sergio Aguero and co. in light of the knee injury sustained by Gabriel Jesus.

City narrowly beat Newcastle 1-0 when they met at St James' Park in December, with a Raheem Sterling goal being the difference between the teams and they are likely to encounter a similarly difficult task at home on Saturday.

Guardiola will no doubt have one eye on the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Bristol City, which comes three days later, but he will pull no punches as he attempts to ensure their first league loss of the season was but a blip.
