Man City flop set for loan deal to newly promoted side as he looks to revive career image

Kalvin Phillips, the Manchester City midfielder who has struggled to make an impact since his high-profile move from Leeds United, is set to join newly promoted Ipswich Town on a season-long loan.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to revive his career after a challenging spell at the Premier League champions.

Phillips joined Manchester City in 2022 for a reported £45 million (57.9m) but has since failed to secure a regular spot in Pep Guardiola's starting lineup.

Injuries and inconsistent form have limited his opportunities, with only 31 appearances and a single-goal contribution during his time at the club.

Phillips aims for career revival

Despite being praised by Guardiola for his effort and potential during City's pre-season tour in the United States, Phillips was left on the bench during the Community Shield victory over Manchester United.

Even with star midfielder Rodri not involved, Phillips did not see any game time, signalling his continued struggle to break into the team.

Last season, Phillips was loaned to West Ham United in a bid to boost his chances of making England's Euro 2024 squad. However, his time at West Ham was marred by injuries and poor form, ultimately costing him a place in Gareth Southgate's team.

Several clubs, including Fulham, showed interest in signing Phillips, but Ipswich Town has emerged as the frontrunner. The deal, expected to be finalized by Friday, does not include an option to buy, indicating that Manchester City is still hopeful of recouping some of their investment in the future.

Phillips has been training with Manchester City during pre-season and is expected to be fit and ready to play for Kieran McKenna's Ipswich side in their Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 17.
